Hi there,

mobo is asus z97-p

I got an i7 4790k O.C to 4.5ghz at 1.225v stable - the temps are 32-38 idle and 75-80 under stress, with prime it can get to 85-90 under stress and when playing arma or something its about 50-60 degrees. Is this completely normal or is there something wrong? I installed the cooler in a phanteks p400 case with its default paste that it came with.

That sounds normal to me. Your idles are fine, as are your gaming and stress testing temps. Those Prime95 temps are not ok though, there is a 'but' to that though. Prime95 puts a large amount of stress on your CPU that you're unlikely to replicate if you only use your PC for gaming, internet browsing, video editing etc.

I personally don't stress test Prime 95 as I'll never end up in a real world situation that's as stressful. Yes you could argue that my PC isn't 100% stable. However, it's 100% stable for what I use it for and that's all that matters. I use Real Bench and the x264 v2 stress testing software for my stability and temp tests.

Sounds normal to me too. Prime 95 use AVX extensions which can add more voltage to the CPU over and above what you have set which adds to the temps of course- check the voltage in CPU-Z while running Prime 95 and you'll see.
