built my i7 setup last night and overall im happy with it, but there are a few things i have thought of whilst at work that would be helpful to know. im sure i will think of more but for now :
1 when i set my ram to run at 1866Mhz (1890MHz i think is its actual speed) windows experience stopped working, any ideas?

2 what should the stock cooler/settings temps be at idle and under load roughly (i know case and internal fans will make a difference)?

3 long wait before post on my GA-X58-UD3R, is this normal?

4 when i go to physx configuration i get errors (cant remember the exact files) do i need to download a physx setup or does it come in the gfx drivers package?

5 is there anyway to increase my hard drive speed (turn off indexing, search...)?

6 do i get another 9800GTX+ cheap and SLI or sell and start again?

cheers, like i said i will probably think of some other stuff, and overall im happy, just a few niggley things.

Erm, from what I can read on your memory issue. You will need to overclock your cpu to get the ram speed to 1866mhz.

For the post issue, I don't own the ud3r motherboard, but on my motherboard, it does a debug check before it posts to make sure memory, cpu etc is working correctly. This may be your case, you can disable this in the bios. Also, in the bios, there maybe a marvelle or ide somthing which is used on the odd colour sata ports on your board. You don't need them so you can disable this in your bios.

I ain't sure about your hard drive, if writing cache is enabled, I think thats your lot you can do. Also, try degragging the hard drive.

If your not a big gamer, you could try and get an old gtx+ for sli. If you are a big gamer, I would reccoment going for the ati 5850 :D

1. the i7 memory controller only goes to 1066mhz or maybe 1333mhz if its a 1156 chip. Memory speed dosent matter much. Anything over 1066mhz on my i7 920 setup is considered an overclock, it still works fine over that speed but probably wouldnt at something crazy like 1866mhz.

2. dont know

3. any USB stuff plugged in? i noticed with my 1366 setup a big increase in post time, turned out it was the 2x external usb hdds i plugged in

4. dont know

5. not really unless you get a SSD, theres debate about removing the page file if you have enough ram or putting it on a separate partition/drive but i think its best to let windows manage it

6. depends on the deal you can get and if your power supply can handle it, generally its better to get a newer card rather than SLI two older ones together of course like i said if you get an amazing deal on the older card it might be worth it.

thanks for that.
the ram is showing up in cpuz as 1890MHz so i guess thats what its running at that, but are you saying because its running out of sync with the cpu thats why windows experience is failing?
will have a good look through the bios and see what settings are enabled.
not sure what options my drive has, and it might even be running at its potential, wasnt sure if windows by default turns on stuff that slows it down.
not a huge gamer, but sold my ps3 to fund the new build so would like to get something that wont make me regret it.

Have you tried running memtest? If you feel you are having stability issues, I suggest scaling back the RAM speed to 1600MHz, as X58 memory bandwidth is so large - you won't lose any performance.

Did you reinstall windows when making the motherboard/CPU/RAM upgrade?

How long is your wait from pressing the power button to windows being loaded?

You shouldn't run memory at sync on nahalem systems. You were advised to on core 2 ones because the FSB and memory clocks are so similar - often the performance benefit of using a memory divider was not justified compared to running at sync with the FSB. However, with i7 the stock "FSB" is 133MHz and your memory clock is 995MHz. You certainly don't want to run the memory at 133MHz.

As for new graphics, as you are using a 1080p display - I would suggest a new card if you are wanting to upgrade, something fast and with 1GB Video RAM.

memtest went all night without errors
yup did a fresh install
dunno not long to load windows from post its the pre post that takes pos 10-15sec from pressing button to post beep
i think mines broken, it says its a bloomfield chip not nahalem.
thinking the 5850 is looking best buy.

bloomfied is the core, nahalem is the architecture. Everything is fine.

I referred to nahalem as the same is true for all i3,i5 and i7 systems.

I have used the UD3R board and it does seem to do this on booting, no worries.

The 5850 is a great graphics card, it is definitely my recommendation if you have the money.

just tried occt and it failed as my cpu was too hot, 81deg under load something aint right.

If its not overclocked, then you may want to re-seat the heatsink and/or reduce the core volts. What vcore are you currently running idle and load?

all i can suggest is to make sure everything is pluggedin propperly,

i would get a 5850 if you can afford it as it should be a considerable upgrade from what i have heared / read.

good luck

Ok, I would suggest first reducing the Vcore. I am running at 1.19 @3.6 GHz, so 2.66GHz should require even less - maybe try 1.15V and see how low you can take it.

Also, reseating the heatsink and using proper thermal paste (not the intel stuff) should give you a few degrees.

reseated and repasted the hsf with evercool-420 (all i had here).
just lowered to 1.15 and see how we go.

Right, try it at 1.19V like me - a small reduction in voltage and should be perfectly stable, hopefully yield some heat reduction.

As for 2.8GHz, that is the speed due to intel turbo mode, so all is standard. Its not to do with the RAM at all.

its on 1.10 and so far it seems to be better, hit 75deg after 5mins of occt whereas i was lucky to get 2min before hitting the 80deg before.
