i7 memory speeds....help?

Hello

I am kind of confused when it comes to the i7 memory speeds. I read that the speed of the ram make little to no difference but if this is the case what is the extra speed for (I'm guessing not overclocking as the old FSB linked to RAM speed way has gone in i7)

I was looking at this for my next build but wondering if its ok.

1600 will get you there just fine. You'll need a 180 BClock to get 3.8GHZ. 180 BClock at the 2:8 memory divider will give you 1440 on the memory.

you need high speed memory to overclock heavily (1600mhz should be fine) without trouble.

you should be able to get at least 4Ghz overclock with this RAM running at 1600Mhz. The viper patriot overclocks very well, looks cool aswell!
