So normally I would recommend an i5 for anyone building a gaming PC, even at higher budgets since the i7 was a waste for their usage, however this is going too change with DX12? I've had a quick look around and for certain thing I saw some great gains, and others not much at all.

Anyone got any info?

These new APIs tend to reduce the CPU workload. I'd expect i7s to be less useful in future for gaming.

I would say more threads are always better. FPS scores only tells one story, switching between game and desktop/apps is always far nicer on an higher end CPU. User experience is hard to quantify!

I guess it depends on budget, it is a bit of a piddle take how much more Intel charge for the same silicon with less bits disabled. Hopefully Zen can redress this somewhat, with current par for the course levels of IPC, decent clocks and 8 real cores. But don't hold your breath

I did a bit of playing with Doom yesterday and I've seen all my cores utilized, which doesn't happen often. If you can get a 6 core proc that's probably a good shout. I still use an old i7-3930K and it shows no signs of aging :)
