ok so the 920 will be dropped when the i5 comes out, should i go for the i7 now or wait and get the i7 later, when i assume a fresh range will come out.

i know oi could go for the i5 but 7 is bigger than 5 so it wont be good enough.

As far as I know the 920 wont be dropped when the i5 comes out, the price may drop but it wont be discontinued. I would wait to see how the new processors perform first.

low end I7's will be phased out but not yet - I5 is comparable with low end I7's for gaming but I7 still king of rendering etc. Intel's philosophy here makes some sense. i7 aimed at gamers/overclockers and optimized for this market; I7 designed for high end workstations and optimized for products. Like xeons are optimized for servers

Easy

sorry edited to say low end I7s will be phased out (intel has already said they will be) the 2 extreme editions are here to stay as are all the xeons

There no way the i7 900 series will be phased out- its their server platform after all. They'll just run in conjuction with the i7 8 series. Unless you need dual CPU support, triple Channel, furure 6 core support and 2x 16pci lanes, the i7 8 series looks like a better bet. It should run cooler and overclock further. You'll need one of the new socket 1156 mother boards for the 800 series. If you dont need hyperthreading then the I5 quads should be faster still when Overclocked.

i7 900 series is NOT server at all all, the Xeon 5500 is which is based on the i7 900 series.

Having said that the i7 900 series won't be disappearing just yet. I believe that the 920 is around till late 2010, there will be higher end launched for people not requiring the 6 core i9 systems.

Personally however unless thinking of upgrades for future to i9 / high end i7 on skt 1336 then I wouldn't invest in a skt 1336 at the moment.

Wait for the i5 on 1156 to launch or even the i7 on 1156.

My bad, I ment 900 series was their highend platform which has the 'Extreme' processors, so they wont be ditching that.
