I7 or AM3

yeah tbh i wouldnt bother upgrading if you can fix it at all

the only reason i would is if you do lots of video encoding an then i would get teh 920 or 860

I7 unless you're poor and can't afford mainboard upgrades but lets face it if 8core amds use am3 socket they will get totally blown out of the water by i9s.

compared to Asus Rampage III Extreme its twice cheaper

compared to an 890gx board, your paying an extra £50 for 2x 16x over 1x 16x/2x 8x. and you loose on board graphics.

i know its cheaper than the R3, but the R3 was massively overpriced. the formular 4 is just...overpriced.

re the crashing issue, my 965 and asus 890gx dont crash. it hasnt crashed on anything yet, anyway. Though the only game i've got that gives the 965 a good pasting is gta4.

Well i just bought the 920 at the great price its at atm and it will last me till the next socket after intels upcomming one, all depends on what your doing.

well, call it a bit extreme and i might get laughed at a bit here but i have worked out a formulae in which i will be able to afford an OEM version of the 980X. It escaped my attention last night which is probably down to playing too much splinter cell conviction but in July i should be able to get that processor if i switch over to the I7 platform at the end of this month. So what i am now considering doing is buying an I7 920 and the Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 which should be 980X ready just so that i can get up and running on the platform. I'll also buy another 4GB of memory at the same time so that i should have 12GB ddr3 in tripple channel mode from the off.

im not really a intel Fangirl but if AMD is better on the next gen i will indeed go back to them.
AMD have allways been about best price to performance ratio (other then FX)
and intel have allways been about highend performance no matter what the cost.

I don't know personally. Can i see the bulldozer beating the I7 line up? yes. Can i see the Bulldozer beating the I9? in all honesty, at the minute, No. Will the AMD bulldozer be cheaper than the I9, more than likely, especially if it maintains the AM3 socket.

I think that AMD may be entering dangerous terriroty when they release the Bulldozer chip. I'm hoping for their sake that the new architecture is better than the architecture used by current generation I7's, that they are AM3 socket and is released at a launch price that is under, or around £300, (there are shadow rumors on the internet that say AMD may have to change the socket to be able to get the maximum performance from the Bulldozer processor) otherwise AMD are going to run into trouble from the off. There is too much to gamble on at the minute.

One of the crippling blows for AMD will be if the processor does have to use a different socket because you may see a lot of AMD users either not bother upgrading or change over to an I7/I9 processor if a budget version of the hexa core is released.

ok... after careful consideration and research, i bit the bullet and decided to stick with AMD and the AM3 socket. After a bit of deliberation i settled on buying the AMD 1090T and an Asus Formula 4 Motherboard combined with 2 sapphire 5770's in crossfire mode, which i think makes for quite a good gaming system (will be upgrading at the end of the year to a single 5970 anyway, probably the asus one).

So far, i'm not in a state of shock and awe over the processor but the motherboard is well worth it. Considering how good this board is, i can't see any reason why someone would want to buy some of the more expensive 1366 socket boards paying particular refrence to the Gigabyte UD9 board. It even sorted out the issues i was having with my OCZ Vertex 2 SSD which is now peaking at around 255MB Write and 270MB Read. When i get a better cooler next month (only using stock at the moment), i may try over clocking the cpu slightly to around 4.1Ghz.

I'm just hoping now that the Bulldozer CPU is AM3 compatible. Intel really didn't seem worth going for to me, i was going to go for the I7 920, eventually going for a Gulftown by the end of the year but considering that Intel seem to change sockets almost every 12 months it didn't seem to be worth it.
