I currently have an Athlon x2 4800+ which has been great but I now want to consider my next upgrade. I haven't been in the loop much these days so all I know is that there is a new cpu in town called the i7.. From the little I've read it looks impressive. I do some gaming but also quite a bit of graphic work, animation etc.

So my question is should I buy an i7 (like the 920) or go for the Q9550 or even the Q6600? Whats the consensus..?

I would just jump straight from your 4800 X2 to an i7 setup,if i allready had a core 2 duo dual core set up then i would upgrade to the Q9550 quad.

I went from Q6600 to an E8600 then to an i7 setup as it only cost me £250 to upgrade.

enlighten me plz how did u pay 250£ for cpu+motherboard+memory i7?

It is impressive, but the early ones are very expensive thanks to the only chipset option being Intel top end X58. Unless you have money to burn either go for the 9550 or wait for the mainstream chipsets/i7's

no it isn't he paid for upgrade 500£ more or less , then he had to sell the previous components.

so the 250£ is not the price he paid for upgrade

You fail.

He has £500. he spends it on components. he doesn't need old ones anymore so sells them for £250. So the net cost of upgrading his pc from his previous spec to his current spec is £250.

I win the argument, you lose. Have a nice day I am off to make a mug of tea.

grow up. u have to have 500£ to upgrade. so he paid around 500£.

then he had to sell his old components.

so thats not 250£ upgrade. u have to have 500£ to upgrade.

Look, he said it cost him £250 right? So obviously the initial cost was £500, but it would have only cost him £250 overall.

So he must have either found them really cheap, or he sold his old components, yes?

I'm just trying to say what i think he did and your making a silly argument the technicalities of the meaning of the cost of an upgrade.

Sold my old components,Asus Maximus Formula II,E8600,150GB Raptor & 8GB of Gskill PC8500.

I wanted to go for a Q series quad but when i weighed it up it seemed pointless spending £200-250 for one when i could sell my old kit and go i7 for £250.

Thanks! ;)

So Amidar, what was the cost of all your new kit?

i.e the cost of everything i7 new before you offset the money for the older kit?

Total was £752 inc vat.

Rampage Extreme II.
i7 920.
6GB Corsair Dominator.

Old kit sold for just under £500.

That’s not bad at all, is the jump noticeable at all? I can remember when I was on a P4 630 and moved to a Core2 CPU and wow :D

My old Q6600 was clocked to 3.4Ghz this new cpu is still at stock 2.66Ghz and general windows tasks seen quite a bit nippier.Gaming wise i can't notice any difference at all between my old Q6600,E8600 & i7 920.
