i7 overclock = clocking down, but not voltage...

Hi guys,

I've been on-and-off overclocking my i7 for a while now. I have a problem in that when I change the settings from anything none-standard, the cpu will never throttle the voltage back. It'll clock down to the lower multiplier but the voltage is always 1.34v (sometimes its 1.18v - odd).

If I leave it stock the cpu will drop to 0.86v which is what I want when overclocking - is this possible? This happens even when I leave the cpu settings stock and change something like the memory multiplier from Auto...

i7 860
MSI P55-GD65

Thanks :)

edit: if I leave the cpu settings at auto and change the ram multiplier the cpu runs at 1.18v.
if I change the cpu settings (ie bus speed) then the cpu runs at 1.34v...
if I leave it all stock the cpu will 'volt down' to 0.86v.

Not sure why you are getting an issue but it's usually better to have a specified voltage if you are overclocking anyway, the auto settings can volt a lot higher than the components actually need. ie. My 920 auto volts to 1.2v under load yet will run happily at 1.1v despite having a 1Ghz overclock.

Thats not what he meant at all.

@op I have 2 i7 cpus and they both downclock BLCK and volatge on my UD5 but on my rex3 i have the same problem 4.1ghz with 1.26vcore drops to 2.5ghz with a x12 multi yet vcore still 1.26, i guess it gor to be a bios setting like one the C1 states etc...
