i7 overclock & Prime

How long should Prime run for to be cosidered stable ?
I have my 920 @ 3.8 Left it to run while i went out and i came back to a message on screen APP CRASH, checked the time and it had run for nine hours. all opinions and recomendations welcome.
By the way way this is my first attempt at an overclock so excuse my ignorance.

I run prime for an hour, pass's after an hour, good enough for me

It depends on how stable you want it to be, my personal rule when overclocking is that it should be no less stable than at stock, otherwise it's a failed overclock.

Whilst it may be 9hrs stable now once the summer comes around and temperatures rise it might not be stable for more than 30mins.

If it's unstable just back it down 25-50MHz and see if that helps, the closer to the chips limit you go the less tolerant it becomes to heat, electrical resistance and voltage dips etc so it's best to leave some headroom.

I run prime for 30 mins or so and as long as it runs all my games etc without a crash who cares

There's quicker ways to prove its stable (enough). Linpack with the LinX front end, I've had 8hrs prime fail that in 10mins. If you're using Prime you'll find the large or blend setting gets the Ci7 hottest with its IMC.

Same I run prime for a hour as i only really play games and there are very few that run quad 100% on all cores.
