i7 Overcloking worth it?

Is it worth clocking? not really as it handles anything you want at stock but for the enjoyment of overclocking itself to me makes it worth it.

You mean having success in a technical achievement is the pull for you and not the actual end result! :)

Do you run at stock or overclocked? . . . Did you ever look into the power consumption of your system and work out how much it costs to run at different clocks or . . .

I'm thinking that is the machine blazes through all your tasks at stock then whats the logic of increasing its power draw if your not seeing a real world gains?

If your using the machine as a professional media workstation and are able to produce a lot more work in less time then it makes perfect sense and in a lot of cases it actually works out more power efficient too! :)

This is close to why I'm considering moving to i7, probably will do at some point. It's also why Im currently on a quad core. The difference between a calculation which takes 10 minutes and one that takes 5 is enormous when you do a lot of them. As a result I'll happily run chips as fast as I can without losing stabilty. As a pleasant side effect it'll do browsing and office work very swiftly too, but were I just playing games I'd be on a phenom 2.

So yeah. My machine doesn't blaze through all its tasks at stock, and probably never will do. One of my friends is a step further along this route, his machine is a frankly rather slow core 2 duo at stock. However almost all of his work is done on the grid, which cheerfully walks all over any desktop computer. As a result, theres no point to him overclocking.

Indeed! :)

That's what I call a really worthwhile gain, I tend to be involved in micro functions and shaving a few nano seconds off here and there! :D

I always think the people who really need a quad core or an i7 would know if they need the hardware speedup or not i.e if you gotta ask then you most likely dont need it heh!

Well the thing is i had a fast dualcore system (E8600 @ 4.4ghz 24/7)that blazed all that i use a PC for before this but i simply wanted new toys to play with. As soon as my water is up im aiming to get 4.5Ghz 24/7 but may drop back to 4Ghz. Obs theres no need and its going to use a fair bit if power but meh. Right now im running 4Ghz 1.15v with speed step enabled.
