i7 running hot

I have just finished building my first machine. I have given prime95 a run and used CoreTemp and RealTemp to monitor.

My i7 950 seems to be running undesirably hot. I have checked the fan (stock) is seated properly, and all seems well.

After 5 minutes of a 100% load. One of the core's hits 80-85, the others seem to settle around the 79 mark.

If i was to get some thermal paste and maybe a better fan what kind of improvement could I expect to see.

Can anyone tell me what improvements they have seen when moving to a non-stock fan and maybe recommend one.

Thanks in advance.
Dan

Sounds spot on too me, load temps aren't too much considering you won't ever really get all of the cores at 100% consistantly to have those temps for a while .. I'd leave it as it is for now..

Although if you are adament you still really want a different cooler I'm sure others will be along and suggest something ideal for you, personally I'd stick !

Thanks Sparx. That's reassuring.

I'd still like to hear if anyone has any suggestions about decent fans, and what magnitude of improvement I'd see in the temp readings.

Would be useful to know, especially if I want to dabble in a bit of overclocking.

Cheers.

If that's a stock heatsink then your temps are perfectly spot on. I wouldn't get the Freezer Pro though, if you're planning on doing any overclocking that cooler will not be able to keep up.... for an i7 get an Hyper 212 Plus at minimum.

I'd say get a Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 - already has thermal paste so you can't mess it up - and better than a stock cooler, and cheap.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler (Socket 939 / AM2 / AM3 / 775 / 1156 / 1366) £18.99 inc VAT

I use this cooler and my CPU peaks about 65-70 at crazy load. About 55 gaming load.

For £1 more you can get a far superior Hyper 212 Plus, keeps my i7 860 at 70c Prime95 load at 3.8Ghz, around 45-50c load at stock.

I believe you have identified the problem. Your temperatures are what anyone gets with the stock cooler, as Intel are quite happy with their chips running at those temperatures. The improvement from an aftermarket cooler would be considerable.

Idle temperatures are a fairly accurate guide to room temperature, but that's about it.

my i7 860 @3.33 ghz with a 480gtx in a watercooled system

35/30/35/35 ambient 22oc

after 3h hard gaming 55-70 but i guess the 480 adds allot to the average temp of the water
