i7 showing up as only 1 core ?

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question... has anyone ever had their 17 920 only show up as 1 core in windows... ? I mean in task manager and also any HW monitoring program... ?


Seems very strange to me, my mate went round to my house a turnt on my pc and somehow since then i only have a 1 core i7 lol.

Any help appreciated.

which tab are u looking at in task manager? and what version of windows u using mate?

vista 64 bit mate, i think it was the performance tab of task manager and also if you go to set the affinity of an app it only had 1 core

have you reinstalled windows since upgrading to i7?

yep it was a new build and a fresh install of vista 64 was installed

True story - this is the only conclusion i can come too also lol everytime he walks into my house even for a second something goes wrong with it lol.

Ah well, will grad all the latest drivers and apps tonight then give it a format and new install and start all over. Will be good to do that anyways seeing as im going to start overclocking it soon also.

What motherboard do you have? On my Asus P6T, I can run with 4+4 HT cores, 2+2 HT cores, 2 cores (HT off), 1+1 HT cores or 1 core (HT off).

I have the Rampage 2 Extreme mobo

hi guys, well a clean install vista and cmos reset later and i still only have 1 core.... what the hell lol ?

Anyone else got any ideas what might be causing this ?

Yeah, you should have an option in your BIOS to enable however many cores you want, or at least my EX58 UD5 has this option, it lets you select from 1 to 4 cores...

So my guess is that someone has been interfering with your BIOS options and set it to use only one core... or as reflux has already said, the cores can also be disabled in MSconfig, under the "Boot" tab and then "Advanced Options", there should be a bit that says "Number of processor cores:"...

Checked this out too and it only lets me select "1" processor in the drop down...

Have you updated your bios to the latest version?

no... i am trying but i fear it may have something to do with me using the asus bios update in windows... (the one on the driver cd) as i did this when i first got the board so not sure if it may have screwed it as i found this post.

Start>Run>MSconfig>Boot>Advanced and see if the 'number of processors box' is ticked.

its not ticked mate but when i do select it i only have the ability to select 1 core... any ideas ?
