Bought the Krypton Intel Core i7 bundle

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-046-OE&groupid=43&catid=339&subcat=1801

It arrived today.

I've applied the thermal paste that came with the cooler (Artic Cooling MX-3 Thermal Compound wasn't in the package) I used all of it and spread it evenly across the CPU using a credit card. I fitted the heatsink and fan, as per the instructions and then fitted everything into my case.

Everthing works ok and I installed Windows 7 64 bit, during a few restarts I checked the temps in the bios and they were being reported as around 65-68 degress C. I have since downloaded and installed Speedfan and Realtemp, both are reporting the same temps across all cores of between 64 and 66 degrees C when the PC is idle.

Surely this is much higher than I should expect, I would have though that this would be the temperature under load not idle.

Any help gratefully recieved.

Additional info.

The case is a Zalman GS 1000.

The Alkaska Venom cooler will once fitted only allows the fan to be fitted so is is facing the back of the case, but blowing into the cooler (as recommened in the instructions). There is a case fan there sucking hot air out, I have turned this fan off and the temps have dropped to around 60-64 now. There is also a fan in the top of the case extracting hot air.

that's clearly not right.

saying that you used all of the TIM sounds like you put quite a lot on when only a thin layer is reccomended (plenty of youtube videos showing the correct application).

that still wouldn't account for those huge temps imo.

I'm sure one of the experts will get in touch soon, but in the mean time I would return the processor to its stock speeds and volts

The thermal paste that came with the cooler was only enough for one application and it was a fairly thin layer anyway.

When I switched off the PC last night the I felt the heat pipes at the very base of the cooler and they weren't particularly hot, especially compared with how hot the heat pipe and heatsinks on the motherboard.

Is there any way to know if the board is reporting the correct temperature?

Using the quick boot app that Gigabyte supply the PC gets to Windows in just a few seconds and Speedfan reports temps of 55 degrees, after the PC has been on for less than thirty seconds.

Down load a copy of realtemp or coretemp both get readings direct from the CPU.

The Krypton package comes pre overclocked so you would see there kind of temperatures under load and probably higher under full load but certainly not when the CPU is idle. I would suggest that you get some more TIM and try re-seating the cooler. I often will re-seat the cooler 3 or 4 times when preparing a system for overclocking. Sometimes the TIM isn't spread right or you get an air bubble - personally I prefer the pea sized blob and squash method
