can someone explain the differences between the 860, 920, 950 etc as the more i read , the more the confused i get. I am just considering going over to i7 but do not want to get something that will be out dated before i even finish building a new rig.
Hopefully i am not being too dense here?:rolleyes:
 
There are two sockets - 1156 and 1366 which mean the number of pins on the CPU.

Intel i5 7xx = 1156 = 2 Channel Memory
Intel i7 8xx = 1156 = 2 Channel Memory
Intel i7 9xx = 1366 = 3 Channel Memory
 
Socket 1156 has the pci-e controller on the cpu and is limited to 16 pci-e lanes eg 16x or 8x 8x.
Socket 1366 has 32pci-e lanes eg 32x or 16x 16x
The difference is about 2-4% between the 2 sockets using 2 ATI 5870's in crossfire

Socket 1156 has a relativly unannounced update path aside from the (s) versions of the current chips that will have a lower TDP

Socket 1136 has an assured path with I9 6 core Cpu's but the I9 cpu's will be in excess of £500 so itll be an expensive upgrade path.
 
Thats what i was lookin for as well thanx guys! Was wondering betwean difference of i7 8xx and 9xx as I have 920 myself. Obviously first on the market are always high end parts and mainstream is introduced later thats why sometimes its worth waiting but im happy with 920 anyway.
