what is the highest voltage you recommend for a i7 920? as I want to see how far i can push it but ant sure on the voltage side.

Temperature dependent. I'd be happy with 1.45V vcore, 1.4V qpi as long as cpu temperatures were under 60. Otherwise however high they go before you pass 70 degrees, then stop. IMO obviously.

Tagging a question onto this, does anyone know of a reliable source for the wattage normally used by an i7 920 under load when overclocked? Anything better than estimating upwards from the TDP would be a good start. I remember reading 200W somewhere.

1.55v is the absolute max, but they are very sensitive to voltage so I'd be very careful, depends how long you want to OC for. I got 4Ghz with a voltage of 1.216v 24/7 temps are around 37c Idle and 65-70c. Anthing less that 80c is just fine, these are hot running chips. The high voltage will degrade the CPU over time. keep it below 1.4v

1.35 VCore, 1.35 QPI, 1.65 Memory are absolute limits for long term use in my opinion, even at those settings temperature will be your biggest issue under stress testing.

I run mine at 1.26v/1.26/1.6v and even then temps reach over 80C on air under Linpack, you will need really low ambient temperature and good airflow for higher voltages.
