I7 vs q6600 in gaming?

I have both these chips. I was looking at Tom's hardward an in games there was only about a ~10% increase at stock clocks. Since im only mainly into gaming and I have a 4870 x2 and don't plan on upgrading a GPU anytime soon should I just sell my i7 system? I can sell it and still make a profit.

The benefit with my q6600 system is that I have 6gb of ddr2 1066 ram while with my i7 I only have 2gb of ddr3 1066 ram.

Heat isn't really an issue here as i have the whole system watercooled and the q6600 I have managed to get stable at 3.4 ghz.

There are some games where you'll notice a bigger difference than 10%, but not many. It depends how much profit you'll make from selling the i7 system really. You'll probably end up buying an i7 or something similar again later on when the Q6600 finally does start to show its age so it's a matter of hassle vs money etc.

I would sell the Q6600 and ram and get 6 GB triple channel DDR3 clock the i7 to 4ghz and have a beast of a gaming rig for the next couple of years

I doubt I can get much money for the q6600 and motherboard. Maybe a decent amount for the RAM but I was thinking of getting the new intel socket when it comes out in 2011 ?

I forgot to mention i lapped my q6600 hence why i doubt it will sell for much. And the motherboard is an ASUS Blitz formula which doesnt seem to go for much on ebay.

I lapped mine and recently sold it for £96inc (included an old scythe heatsink)

You must have a really bad chip if you cant get it clocked past 3.4ghz on a water cooling setup

Considering its a B3 stepping and in a loop with a 4870 x2 which went from 120 degress load for 49 degrees and a single and daul radiator with 800 rpm fans i consider it to be ok. My new setup will have 3 thermochill PA.120.3 in a custom enclosure and maybe dual loop so I could prob get a bit more from the chip.

hmm i think i just might sell the q6600 rig an get better ram. Just realised the new sockets will be expensive when they come out :p Guess ill just be investing in a better GPU and RAM when the time comes I doubt the i7 will bottleneck for a while :)

stay away from ebay ? thats the place i got all my i7 hardware from :P but yeah im thinking of just keeping the i7 sytem. Would be a shame to let go of the bitspower r2e waterblock :p

Never seen the point in an I 7 system for gaming personally. There's nothing out their that a q6600 can't handle well I think an I7 is overkill for console ports really. But on the other hand I would keep the I7 now that u have it as your b wasting even more money.:(

Q6600 with 6GB RAM is arguably better than i7 with 2GB RAM, simply because you've got a memory bottleneck.

i7 IS better than Q6600 for gaming although obviously it will only really shine in heavily cpu dependent games or when using low resolution (unlikely on a 4870x2!). Best thing to do would be to try and get yourself 3/6GB DDR3

I would advice if there is no need to upgrade now, but wait until the end of the year. New tech is coming out from both AMD and Intel. New sockets, probably new rams, and new CPUs.

At 3.5/3.6 the Q6600 is fine enough to cut any game with a 5850 at 1080p.

The one off game you might see some difference, doesn't justify the costs.

There is a thread on the Graphic Cards forum here, about the AVP benchmark.
You will see that even a Q6600 is pretty much at the same level as the i7 on the same speeds.
