recently bought a 2nd hand i7700k.
It works fine, but when I use a hardware analysis tool it shows it as 3.6ghz.
It displays as a 7700k too.

I read recently that it's the non k version that's 3.6ghz.. and the k is 4.2ghz .

What is happening? Thoughts ?

Try running hwmonitor. Scroll down to see the cpu speeds then run something like prime95. Check the boost values and see if it's running at 3.6 still.
I know most basic hardware monitors see the cpu as 3.6. Its base value. It's only through tools like hwinfo do you see it boost above it.
Btw prime95 that cpu to test it. Its second hand. You dont know what it's been through so confirm its stable

Edit: I stand corrected. Sorry about that. Your cpu should be 4.2 base value. And yes the 7700 runs at 3.6 base. That's weird though. Why is yours showing as a 7700k
