i7920 or i7940?

Hi mate, My temps @ 3.8 are 40 idle and a max of 76 at full load using a Noctua and Antec 1200 case (All fans on low setting) . All voltages set to auto apart from 1.3 on vcore

I just ordered a i7 920 chip.
My question is... i have DDR3 ram from my last build which i now sold on. And its 1333Mhz speed i think. Will this cause a problem for me when i want to overclock. Most people seem to be using 1600Mhz ram.

As long as it operates at 1.5-1.65V, anything more and Intel claim it can damage the i7's memory controller.

It's actually keeping VTT and Ram voltage within .5, so standard VTT is 1.125, put .5 on, equals 1.65. You raise VTT when you overclock as BCLK is very dependant on it so the more you increase the VTT, the more range you have. Intel specs VTT as 1.335, so you could have ram up to 1.835v with the 0.5 range as specced by Intel.

Nice clock you have bluesouljah, what speed is your ram? I'm getting the same mobo with a 920 and 1333Mhz Corsair, would love it hit 4.4Ghz.

It's just 1333 run with a 6 times divider. I'm currently running it at stock as I want to redefine the overclock a bit more. Also, I noticed that Grid doesn't like hyperthreading on, so I'm running with that off at the moment as I'm playing that a lot, also had 3.9 with four cores and turbo on at 1.375vcore. It's the CPU PLL and VTT I'm playing with more at the moment.

Cool, I hope I can get to 4Ghz. Do you have msn bluesouljah?

Yeah, I'm on Messenger, but might shift this windows 7 build and put vista back on over the weekend, so might not be available for a day or so. Oh and the messnger is not the email in trust. When are you building your setup?

I had an xfx 790i with 4 (4x1) gigs of corsair DDR3 before, I found out the triple packs were using the same unit and so I bought another 2 gigs of DDR3 and added them to the build, giving me 6gigs. It is running in triple channel mode as per cpu-z, however one thing I've found out is that its difficult to use higher bandwidth RAM if trying to populate all six slots, it's better to have a 3x2 Ram config for higher bandwidth. I'll just swap these in when it gets a lot cheaper. It will do me for now. I'm not sure there's actually the need, though, apart from bench numbers.
