Hi all.

I'm in the middle of choosing new components for new PC.

I'm currently running a Q6600 at normal speed and I'm thinking of getting an i7 as my next processor.

With the i7 extreme (the super expensive 6 core 12 thread) processor way out of my price range. Which is the best one to get?

I've read a lot of reviews and there's a lot of different opinions relating to the i7 range.

I do a fair amount of gaming and a lot of all sorts of different stuff, nothing too heavy duty though.

Just wondering if any of you fine people could offer some advice.

Thanks in advance!

Tony

In my humble opinion, if your set on getting an i7 you might as well fork out and get the 950.

The price difference is minimal from a 930 - pity you missed out on last weeks TWO offer as 950's were just £217!

Why don't you OverClock your Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 processor?

What kind of extra speed am I likely to get from my 6600?

I've got a decent Zalman cooler on it at present and it's never been over stock speed in it's life!

hi Tony

welcome to the forums :)

you can get 3.2-3.4 with ease on a decent motherboard

what is your current specification?

Go with the 930 :) It's a good overclocker generally. Depends if you're wanting to overclock like :p

Also sell the Q6600 for extra cash, as it's still extremely sought after, Last i checked you could get about £80 for 1

Saying that, if you've never overclocked your Q6600, It may be worth seeing how it does, it could save you buying anything. Many people are still happy using a Q6600 these days, it is most defiantely not a slacker when its overclocked

To be fair my PC does everything I want it to.

The only thing on my shopping list that I really do want is a new gfx card.

So I'm still weighing up between a GTX480 or waiting until the new nvidia range comes out.

My 5770s run any game I throw at them, but I obviously can't run them at full visual glory.

At the risk of sounding silly.

How exactly do I overclock my 5770

I went into the ATi overdrive settings, moved up the sliders slightly, clicked on test custom clocks and it said failed.

Is that a normal thing?

I wouldn't have thought there was much need to upgrade those, they can't be that old surely? Unless you have a huge resolution I'd stick with them, it sounds more like you have a case of upgraditus!
