Hey guys, i'm starting to look at machines for a new rig, and seeing as I basically know nothing about PCs anymore, this time I think i'm just gonna roll with an OCUK pre build, but I was wondering about a couple of i7s i've seen in the specs.

It's between the i7 2700k and the i7 3820. The specs with these chips in are either similarly priced, or the 2700k is more expensive, and the same goes for the item on it's own, but I would have thought the 3820 is a much better chip, as I think it's more recent plus it's a quad channel controller.

Is there anything I should be aware of between these two generations of processors?

Given that they're both roughly the same price is the 3820 the better choice then? Only other thing I can see is the 3820 doesn't have an unlocked multiplier, but seeing as i'll get it pre-overclocked I can't see that affecting me much.

Well the motherboards for LGA2011 start at a much higher price than LGA1155 so is it really that close in price?

Also you get Lucid Virtu+Quicksync technologies with a Sandybridge and Z68 board with display connectors.

Maybe i'm missing something, and this might now be the wrong forum, but two similarly spec'd machines (16gb RAM, 680/7970, same case, same CPU cooler), one with a 2700k @ 4.6 and one with a 3820 @ 4.20 has the 2700k a good £200 more expensive, which is what is confusing me. Could this just be down to the overclock?

The two machines:

The 3820 with a 7970, the 2700 with no Sli upgrade, and both with the Corsair 800D.

I'll move this post to another forum if needed.

Different PSU, HDD, Blu-Ray instead of just DVD

Also the you cant select the GTX680 card with the "Ultima 9300i Prism" (but OCUK will make changes like that for you if you ask)

Ah yeah, didn't see the Blu-ray or PSU so I guess between them they make the price gap up.

Main reason i'm asking is because I want the most future proof CPU I can get on my budget. Graphics card is less important immediately because swapping in a new one or grabbing a crossfire card is less hassle than changing CPU and possibly having to get a new mobo/ram.

I'll be streaming in at least 720p, preferably 1080p so the processing power is needed.
