I9 9900k cooled with H80i v2

Not even a smidgen of a chance that cooler will work for a 9900k.

Infact I would expect steam to be billowing out of every opening in your case as that thing blows apart.

280mm min, and I would think that you would do better with a 360.

Really? That bad? I have an i7 2600k OCed to 4.6 with 1.3v and it doesn't go above 70c....
 
Double the amount of cores has to play into ones thinking here.

So far what I'm seeing is that 240mm rads just aren't able to keep up.

One of the top of the line 360's would be preferable, especially if you end up with a High VID chip.

Personally I'd go with a custom loop.

Hmmm food for thought... 360 is just too big so I'll have to go top of the range 240...

No, not that bad. Double the cores does not necessarily double the power...

It would work OK, you wouldn’t get that much of an overclock though.

I would imagine some clever overclocking/undervolting/AVX offsets would get you some cores at 5ghz with all core load at low-mid 4s.

Might as well try it, nothing to lose.
 
well the h80i v2 is a 120mm rad, so i dont think it will quite cut it, but some of the 8 pack bundles with guaranteed overclocks only have the 240mm aio, so i would assume that a 240 would be ok.
 
I’m using a H150i and it barely cools the 9900k at 5.1ghz (85-90 degrees under full synthetic load).

At stock your h80 might do it in gaming load.
That's crazy, I may as well put the car radiator in my rig! I just don't believe that you need a rad of that size minimum, that's crazy. There seems to be very little liquid cooler reviews on this CPU online...

To be fair, at stock frequency the 9900k does seem to able to do quite low voltage like 1.2ish.

To get the 5ghz all-cores which is what everyone wants, they seem to need 1.25-1.3 which is when they start getting toasty.
 
For overclocking it really depends on the quality of the cpu you get. Some need more volts to OC and that comes with more heat.
9900k quality varies massively from cpu to cpu.
 
I went with a h100i pro and temps have not exceeded 75 under load but thats at stock speeds
Are you going to overclock it at all? It looks like my H80i V2 isnt going to be man enough for the job so ill just have to upgrade to a different rad. Im not going over 240mm though as there will be no where to fit the thing!
 
Stock 9900k is a 95w part.
Generally recommended is 120mm custom loop radiator for every 100w heat.
Say, an aio cooler is 50-75% as efficient as a custom loop, then you'll need 180-240cm of rad length.
Overclocking, and at max load, 9900k can hit 210-250w depending on vrm quality.
So really, 360mm aio is a minimum for an overclocked 9900k.
Really should be a 360mm custom loop lol.

I have been meaning to spend an evening seeing how my chip fares but been busy with a house renovation. Under prime im pulling 1.40v out of the box and from what I've seen I could probably drop this by a reasonable amount to reduce load temps, am curious to see how far I can push it at stock voltage but fear it would result in me changing to a 360 rad lol.
 
It doesn’t help the solder job is rendered useless by the thickness of the die either, given it seems possible to delid, lap and apply liquid metal and shave off anywhere up to 10-15c... 120mm isn’t enough regardless.
