IAM driving course

No, Pass plus is though (especially considering the Police/Fire service offer it for free in some areas)

Yes as it will teach you how to drive a car whereas driving lessons just teach you to operate a car and pass a test.

I thought Pass Plus was only useful for about a year after qualifying? And was more geared towards giving you experience of motorways etc. That's long behind me now so likely of minimal point?

Ahh, so it's actually a genuinely useful thing to do then?

1st one - probably not long term.

2nd one - definately.

People in this household have done it. 1 Adult, 1 teen + 1 22 year old and everyones driving has benefitted :)

Pass plus is a waste of money IMO, I'd already driven in rain, fog, night and snow on lessons. The only thing I hadn't is motorway which isnt exactly rocket science and it didn't save me a bean on insurance.

IAM is a good thing to do, it will give you a saving, but more importantly it will give you instructed teaching from highly skilled policemen about how you will be able to avoid accidents, from learning road positioning, how to anticipate drivers i.e. know every idiotic thing they can do at any moment and driving so if they do those things you can take action. Avoiding accidents will save you a ton of money on insurance ;)

Well put :p

IAM is a bad thing to do, it might give you a marginal reduction in your insurance premiums but its doubtful that over a lifetime it will actually save you money. It will probably however give you a superior feeling over other road users and might even make you take more risks because you believe you are a higher qualified driver than everyone else who collected 5 crisp packets and sent off for their licenses.

Going by that theory learner drivers are the best because they don't have licenses and won't think they are good drivers?

Your reasoning does sound a little, er... special :D

Joe Bloggs drivers often don't even recognise risks than an IAM training driver would.

The training I did helped me assess roads in more detail and read way further up the road but opened my eyes to overtaking opportunities, it can be remarkably easy to make progress with good road positioning and non committal to overtakes... It's the run up overtakers who are the risk takers as they often end up with no where to go. IAM should train that out of you.

PH advanced section seems to be people just overtaking others. I'm not sure if they are speeding or how they manage to find all these other people driving below the speed limit?

Everywhere, people like to use their brake pedal as much as their throttle. Getting verage speed near the speed limit is how you make progress.

I had the pleasure of overtaking an SLK55 AMG in my Insight as I came up to him doing 40mph down a good B road, on the straight he then accelerated to a whopping 50mph.
