I'm just curious what people think at this point in time. I'm struggling with my upgrade itch atm, and Haswell seems quite a long way out...

Im going from my 920 to 3770k, needed a new mobo anyway so i thought id wait till ivybridge was released

I'm thinking i7 950 @ 4.0Ghz to an IB - just want to wait and see how much speed I can get out of them first (I overclock them for a living at work haha). From all accounts 5.5 - 6.0Ghz should be possible on air - can't wait!

Cooling doesn't make much of a difference on SB, and I'm expecting IB to be the same. To give you an idea, I've got over 30 SB 2700k's "in the wild" running at ~5.0Ghz 24/7, at 100% cpu utilisation, on air. I've seen them hit about 65 degrees C tops - the issue is that above and beyond 1.45volts vcore, they simply just start getting loose and fall over, and are unable to hold their overclock. Temps aren't the issue with these chips - volts are, and I can't see Ivy being any different.

Depends, does your i7-920 do everything you need it to? I know mine does.

Even though an overclocked Ivy Bridge will use less power and kick out less heat compared to an overclocked i7-920, it won't pay for itself in its lifetime. I don't see any need to re-asses my initial estimate that I'd upgrade in 2013 at the earliest.

I'm tempted by a cooler and more efficient CPU running at a higher clock, I'm also tempted by SATA 3 and PCIe 3. But I have to admit that I've yet to install anything that my 920 struggles with. The only thing that annoys me a bit is that I cannot seem to get anything above a 3.6GHz OC that is stable, and this is on a D0 stepping model. Perhaps its the motherboard.

Anyway, ty for the feedback.

Are there issues with lack of PCIe 3 and using newer GPUs?

As I too have seen no reason to upgrade the CPU, apart from SATA3 and have been contemplating a 7950 or 7970 as the biggest performance gain from my 5870. Would there be any performance issues with using a PCIe3.0 GPU on a PCIe2.0 port?

When I say I'm tempted by PCIe 3, its actually pairing it with GK110 that I'm thinking of. The 7970 is a good card, no doubt there, but I already have a 580 and I cant really justify the expense for what I see as a minor upgrade. Especially when I know something significantly stronger will be arriving later in the year.

Sensible me thinks: Wait until you have reliable information, to make an informed purchase.

Senseless me thinks: Must have MOAR NAOW!!!1!eleventyone!

Ah Mah Gad. Who wins?
