Need a replacement fan on my girlfriends r40 thinkpad...any ideas how much this would cost for the fan and how easy is it to replace yourself? Many thanks for any help :D

can anyone at all help me with this...my gf has been quoted £115 to fix this problem and being a student, this is right out of her price range!

it should not be too difficult to replace, and if its out of warranty then you can do it yourself without too much worry.

i would first back up everything important that she has to cd or something.

and then proceed.

i will send you an e-mail as to where you can buy one.

if you could get a specific part number that would help too.

good luck.

I think you can get detailed service manuals for thinkpads from the lenovo website. I'm certain i downloaded one for my thinkpad at somepoint and it had detailed information about taking the thing apart and replacings heat sinks and the like.

Didn't look too taxing, so you should be able to do it yourself assuming you can get the part easily.

I've had no luck in finding manuals on how to replace the fan, i've successfully dismantled the thinkpad and have removed the fan, but i'm not sure whether it's a simple case of just fitting the new fan, or do you need something between the heatsink and the chip, some kind of heat conductive paste? Sorry if I sound like a noob, haven't had to replace a fan/heatsink before!

Right, have the new fan/heatsink combo....as in my previous post...can I just fit them in place of the old one, or does there need to be something between the heatsink and the chip?

Yes, you'll be able to get something that does the job. Maybe not Arctic Silver. Where do you live?

Thing is, it's not for me, i'm fixing my girlfriends laptop, she's at warwick uni, so i'll be around coventry on saturday when I go to see her...that'll be my first chance to get into town as I work 7-6 most days!
