I've been given an IBM Thinkpad 570 today as I need something with a serial port on it for a program that doesn't work with USB - serial adaptors.

Work colleague said it hadn't been used for a couple of years but should be OK. I turned it on and it comes up with a padlock symbol, he says he doesn't know what the password is or that it even had one, any ideas how to bypass this? It has Windows 98 on it.

I found a manual for it online which says short circuit a jumper under the DIMM and switch on but this didn't work, I tried it twice in case I didn't do it correct first time.

Andy.

I take it its a BIOS password and not a program running in windows, if it is you could just format over it.

I have an old IBM with a BIOS password. The only way to circumvent it is to hook up the BIOS Chip to some program, needless to say a long and drawn out process.

Some machine you can just take out the CMOS battery but not with this IBM, might be different for you.

Did you post in MM a while ago after a latpop with a serial port for a car alarm?

It must be the BIOS password as it just comes up with the padlock, even if you hit F1 you can't get in either. Yes it was me after one for my car alarm, why?

Andy.

Oh I had an IBM T22 for sale, with a serial port.

You could try taking it apart and removing the CMOS battery, it might work.
