Hi guys i have the above and the machine is working fine main prob is i can hardly see whats on the screen.

Its very faint so much so i am unable to see the mouse pointer. i also had it set up so i could have it plugged into the telly, telly now says no signal.

Ive tried the fn key along with the up down brightness buttons but it doent get brighter or darker.

me thinks it might be internal graphics card but anyone got any ideas, tried running on just the power supply but still no joy.

cheers eric

Hello Eric,

Sounds like the backlight or the inverter board for the backlight has gone on your screen, which is why you can see things on the screen but it is very faint. Unfortunately the backlight is an integral part of the screen rather than a separate part & getting hold of a replacement screen is not going to be easy at all, let alone cheap.

What's the type number of the R31? (found on in white letters on a black sticker next to the serial number)

hi Jonny,
its atype 2656, im hoping its the inverter board i bought a cheap second hand one on ebay today, so just waiting on it coming if that dont fix it then its probably a scrap and sell for bits job as its pretty old
thanks for your help,
cheers eric

No probs - am a bit of an expert on ThinkPads as I work for a reseller who specialises in them so I know their quirks as well as those of the IBM (now Lenovo) website.

got my replacement invertor in post today , only bought it yesterday and it all works fine again.
it was only a 5 min job to replace it. it was a second hand one so not sure how long it last.
