I purchased an iBook G4 last year through the a Government Initiative called the Home Computing Scheme. It was a bit of a tax break for employers to offer IT Equipment at good prices.

Now the iBook is just over a year old and as part of the deal I was supposed to have had a further two years Apple care cover. Last week the screen just went grey and I cannot get any kind of display at all. It is responding to keystrokes and to ejecting and inserting of DVD's. I have put the O/S install disk but still the grey screen prevails.

Is there anyway to start in safe mode(If such a thing exists for iBooks etc).

The problem I have is two fold

A) The company have now closed and Applecare are saying they have no such record of my warranty

B) I am what would be classed as a novice with Mac's

The last thing I want to do is to send it off to Apple and have a hefty bill if this maybe a problem there is a common fix for.

Thanks in advance

You can check what Apple regard your warranty status as at:
http://www.apple.com/uk/support/contact/

Just key in your serial number and your Apple ID and it will tell you what warranty you have taken out on your product and for how long :)

If your Applecare extended warranty doesn't show up find your paperwork for it and query it with Apple. *Then* contact them about the faulty screen ;)

A guy at work had this - it works fine through an external monitor but he can only see a grey screen on the TFT display built into the laptop

It looks like a logic board failure (their name for a motherboard). He tried replacing the screen and cables but that didn't fix it. The Apple people said that he'd need a new logic board at a cost of £400+ so he's just been using it with an external screen
