ibook memory problem...

...my little ibook has taken a savage beating over the last 2 years but she's still chugging along... the only major problem is that Mac OS is only recognising 256Mb RAM - i installed another 256Mb of RAM ages ago (from crucial) but it appears for whatever reason it's no longer working.

i need more RAM as with office running and endnote in the background things are sluggish, what are the chances of it just being the RAM and not a problem with the socket or the motherboard? if it's just the RAM stick itself, i'll get a 512Mb replacement from Crucial. No amount of reinstalling the suspect stick seems to work and i haven't got another module to try in the machine. is there a Mac version of memtest avaliable?

cheers

dan.

What happens when you swap the sticks? If it were the socket that was broken the dead stick would come back to life when in a different socket.

it was 256Mb to start off with and i just added the other stick after i bought it... wouldn't the 256mb which came with the machine be on the motherboard itself? i can't see another stick in the compartment under the keyboard.

Yeah, unfortunatelly these iBooks have the factory installed memory soldered on to the motherboard.

All I can suggest is to try another stick of memory to determine where the fault is.

iBooks have one soldered in, and one user accessible.

Try reseating the ram before considering it blown. Also try About this Mac in the Apple menu, and then click more info. Click memory and then see which slot is still populated.

If it is the soldered in memory (bank 0 I think) then it is not serviceable. However if it is bank 1 then you can RMA safely.

Check online which bank is which - I am doing this from memory.

taking the RAM module out makes no difference to the amount of recognised RAM or performance in Mac OS X, so imagine the stick is duff, i just hope this is the case and that the socket isn't goosed...

uh-oh...

according to the System Profile (which i've just belatedly checked), DIMM0/BUILT-IN is empty...

DIMM1/J31 is ok...

:(
