Hey All

Right, so my Q6600 is currently running at 3.2Ghz (ignore the sig). I am looking to get 3.6Ghz from it and so I today replaced the 3 standard fans in my CM-690 with 3 x 140mm Fractals and 1 x 120mm Fractal.

I have just completed a IBT and the temp maxed out at:

Core 0: 66'c
Core 1: 66'c
Core 2: 59'c
Core 4: 59'c

As a guess, how much more room do I have on overclocking with those temps? I seem to remember that the jump from 3.2 to 3.4 needed a little more vcore juice but I had to underclock my RAM, hence I went back to 3.2Ghz. If I can get 3.6Ghz I can run 1:1 ratio with my RAM.

Thoughts?

75c was my comfortable max temp on my old q6600, though at the time i was testing with prime95 as IBT hadnt been released, you may need a hefty jump in voltage to hit 3.6ghz, (whats the vid of the chip btw)? My own 1.2750 vid q6600 required 1.4 vcore at 3.6ghz, temps maxed at 68-68-62-62.

Oops, sorry about small post.

Trying 3.4Ghz again, and on test 4, core 0 and 1 have already shot upto 77'c.

Its annoying as for 3.2Ghz I only need +0.025V, for 3.4Ghz I need +0.150V. GAH!

Yep, the voltage jumps do get increasingly higher for the increase in clockspeed, i needed a jump from 1.4vcore to just over 1.5 for 3.8ghz, id test with prime small fft as it generates lower temps than IBT.

Right, at the end of IBT @ 3.4GHz:

Core 0: 78'c
Core 1: 79'c
Core 2: 70'c
Core 3: 70'c

Now, like you say, IBT does give higher temps then prime95, but I want to ensure that its both IBT and Prime95 stable. What actually is the MAX I can push the cores in terms of temps?

EDIT:

Just ran ITB with the following settings:

400 x 9 @ 0.200V

It did pass but with the following max temps:

Core 0: 84'c
Core 1: 84'c
Core 2: 75'c
Core 3: 75'c

CPU Temp (using hardward monitor): 73'c

What do we think? I will run a prime95 now and see about results.

Yea I know...well at least I know that those settings are stable. I just need better cooling. I dont think just getting another Apache Black for my Megahalems is going to be enough though....

I love the TP i45 - it is a brilliant mobo for overclocking, it isn't as good with quads as it is for dual cores (from all the stuff I've read) I intend to get a Q6600 and see how far I can go:D.

I dont like the voltages in the BIOS. My VID is 1.300 on my CPU, I put +0.150V in the BIOS and I get under 1.4V still...its weird.

The BIOS isn't the best I've seen hehe, but once you get familiar with it then it's good. There are a lot of settings to tinker with especially with memory timings.
The voltages can vary. Have you used CPU-Z or similar software to see if the voltage is drooping under load? Mine changes depending on if speed step has kicked in or if it's under load during a stress test.

Yea I use CPUZ for information as required.

Annoyling, I thought I had 3.6Ghz, as after prime95 max core temp was 73'c, but me and my girlfriend smelt a bit of burning which seemed to be from the PSU I believe...not good!

Indeed - not good!
Getting 3.4 - 3.6 out of a Q6600 on air is getting to the toasty zone for most!
To get past this point its gonna take a good chip (lower voltage) or more radical cooling, dont damage your system for the sake of a slightly better overclock!

I really want to do some custom water cooling with this rig but I'm gonna wait till I've done my new build first - then I will use this system to do overclocking experiments on water.

Yea I think I will stick at 355 x 9 for now. Means my memory is overclocked anyway and most likely I will upgrade my system at somepoint anyways.

I just need to tart the system up a little now :P

Thanks for you help mate.
