Ice Bucket Challenge

All the people who ask how this helps charity donations must have very short memories. The last time this happened with the 'no makeup selfie' charity donations soared.

Anything that increases donations to charity can not be a 'waste of time' no matter how self indulgent / attention seeking they are...

If I get nominated, I will take part, and I will splash it all over facebook / twitter with my nominations.

Come at me haters.

Actually if you do the maths it is totally relevant.

So have you donated?

BB x

If what it does is encourage one more person to donate than already would have done, as a consequence of being nominated, then it has worked. If someone just sent you a message that said, "I nominate you to donate to charity" then you'd probably just ignore it and not donate anything. This has the opposite effect.

The stupidity of the tasks, however, is a different matter.

Feel free to show me the maths about how a bucket of water in the US could be used in Africa.

Yes, I have donated. I have also, more importantly in my opinion, been made aware of and educated myself about ALS.

Amazing how many people in here seem genuinely angry about other people having fun for a good cause. Yes, it's silly, so what? Get on with your own lives and stop trying to belittle people for something like this.

Oh...I didnt know it was for ALS

The guys on my Facebook are doing it for Macmillan :o:confused:

Looks like it started in the US for ALS, but as that's an American charity a lot of people in the UK are doing it for Macmillan.

The stupidity of the tasks, however, is a different matter.

Silly =/= stupid. The necknomination craze was stupid, this is just a bit of fun.

If someone nominated me to do this I would probably still ignore it :p

I wouldn't say telling the person to "**** off" then blocking them and not donating is quite the opposite to just ignoring it and not donating... :p

"look at me, I posted a video and mentioned a disease.... I helped, thankfully that is all I need to do, the millions or billions(bill gates did one) I have in my bank account can stay there because I posted a pointless video that will magically help fund research into a cure".

Pointless and stupid, was quite hoping bill gate's video was going to end with something sensible along the lines of, "rather than raise awareness of a condition and hope that a few more people who make minimum wage who watch this donate a few dollars they really can't afford, I'm just going to go ahead and donate a billion dollars to ALS research".

That is what I find particularly galling about celebrities asking poor people to help with charities. It's free publicity, they get to look caring and nice.... it doesn't cost them a penny. Bono irks me greatly, begging other people to part with their money while he gets the credit and becomes a billionaire while pretty much not sharing his wealth at all.

Yes Bill Gates does give away far more than most and helps many people and he does I think have a plan to give away more than half of his money to charity over time, but the point still stands.

When people think telling a lot of other people about a disease will magically cure it, nothing actually gets done.

It's a shame because the various conditions that effectively lock people in to their own bodies with no way to communicate are the most horrible diseases, almost as bad are those that leave your body intact but destroy your mind.

The idea of a disease like alzheimers or ALS god damn terrify me.

Last year ALS donations from charity were approx. $1.8m
This same period (larger thanks to this silly yet effective ice challange) has soared to $15m+.
Must be worth it.

I for one can't stand it when famous people use their time and position to raise awareness and solicit donations for good causes

So what's your plan of action? I hadn't heard of ALS before this and it caused me to donate when I otherwise wouldn't have. Is zero publicity for these illnesses your preferred approach?

I really struggle to see why some people are so offended by this. You are even aware of the magnitude of Bill Gates' philanthropy yet still use the fact he tipped a bucket of water over his head as a reason to criticise the man. Is it jealousy?

Terrible isn't it.

Think you have missed the point. The more people know about a disease / charity, the greater the chance more people will donate.

A lot of people who post these videos actually do donate. Just look at the figures.

These diseases scare you. Done anything to contribute?

It's basically the technological equivalent of praying :p

Am I being dense? Please say this is sarcasm.

Unfortunately I think Rich L is one of the few people who is being sarcastic about his disapproval, a lot of people in this thread are actually sincere.

WHY ARE PEOPLE HAVING FUN AND RAISING MONEY FOR CHARITY?!:mad::mad:

Maybe it's just because it's Monday.

Fair few high profile people doing it too. Zuckerburg and Gates have both done it, and Weird Al nominated Barak Obama and The Pope, lol. :D

It does baffle me. People complaining about charity work? Just because it's all over the news and on social media. Best places to be if you want to reach a maximum audience.

These people probably complain to their council about people dressed up in fancy dress outside their local train station...

Wonder how many people here have actually done anything for charity recently? Aimed at the people moaning...

Jumping in ice water after sitting in a sauna is something I do frequently.

This isn't very impressive.

That said, if it's raising money or awareness for a good cause then stfu and let it happen you miserable toads :o:p

To be honest I have heard more about the charity aspect for this stunt in here than any of the idiots on my Facebook.
