Ice Bucket Challenge

It does baffle me. People complaining about charity work? Just because it's all over the news and on social media. Best places to be if you want to reach a maximum audience.

These people probably complain to their council about people dressed up in fancy dress outside their local train station...

Wonder how many people here have actually done anything for charity recently? Aimed at the people moaning...

I don't think anyone is moaning about people doing things for charity.

It's all the attention-*****ing "look at how wonderful I am" rubbish that goes along with it.

By all means go ahead and donate to charity if you want, but you don't need to make a song and dance about it.

Unfortunately I think Rich L is one of the few people who is being sarcastic about his disapproval, a lot of people in this thread are actually sincere.

WHY ARE PEOPLE HAVING FUN AND RAISING MONEY FOR CHARITY?!:mad::mad:

Maybe it's just because it's Monday.

I think the point of most posters is why does there need to be the look at me I am such an amazing person for doing this for charity rather than just giving anyway. Giving to charity is a selfless action, posting stupid look at me videos on social media is a selfish action.

So.... they donate to charity then publicise doing actually doing it which may mean that more people do it themselves...... some people are truly ********

That's half the point though. Make a song and dance, someone else goes 'WTH is this?', 'Ah that looks like fun, I'll do one'. Rinse repeat.

I understand it gets boring after a while if your facebook is full of videos of essentially the same thing, but you can't knock the effects it has on donations.

Donations that wouldn't of happened if it wasn't for the song and dance.

I've now googled ALS, and I haven't sponsored any money not because it's a poor charity, but I just can't donate to every charity that is publicised. Whilst any charity is a worthy cause if it strikes a chord with with you, I don't see the challenge bit.

I understand that this is mainly just an awareness raising stunt, that's fine, in fact that's great as I'm sure some people will be interested in sponsoring such a charity.

They should just called it ALS awareness - or Ice bucket for ALS awareness though - but I guess seeing "famous" people do something silly gets sado internet geeks worldwide talking about something outside of their computer monitor then it's all good.

Will I do it? No. I'm a nobody, and pouring cold water over myself isn't really something I feel deserves any sponsorship. I'll happily change my facebook profile to an ALS sponsored picture for a day or two - now, if I were going to the middle east to help refugees or to West Africa to help contain the Ebola outbreak, then I'd hope to get a bit of sponsorship.

Which creates awareness, and possibly more donations.

If Bill gates had done it in comeplete silence. Or whoever it was that started this trend, donations wouldn't be exceeding the US$15m mark.

And there wouldn't be this thread (which might be a good or bad thing)

As said above, no one is really complaining about the charity work but the social media aspect. The charity aspect of these stunts is good but it further feeds the modern self obsessed nature of social media. For the record, I have a deduction made from my salary for charity but you don't see my posting in on facebook every month about how awesome I am.

Maybe you should... might make others do the same? :P

People do things differently. Yes we live in a self absorbed world. Not going away any time soon.

Might as well exploit it.

+1 for your monthly donations though.

the millions or billions(bill gates did one) I have in my bank account can stay there because I posted a pointless video that will magically help fund research into a cure".

have a random fact on how much Bill gives to charity...

"Since becoming billionaire, Bill Gates has since donated over $28 billion to charities and encouraged over 40 of the world’s wealthiest to sign his “Giving Pledge,” aim to donate the majority of their wealth to charity during their lifetimes. He started giving to charity in 1999, when he donated $16 billion in Microsoft stock to his family foundation. With Warren Buffett as one of the biggest donor, the foundation is now one of the biggest philanthropic institution in the world.

His charity tackles AIDS, tuberculosis, polio and funds famine-resistant crops to fight hunger mostly in Africa.

Or it makes you think "what a tit" :p

I don't currently donate to charity, as I simply can't afford it at the moment, but I certainly wouldn't be narcissistic enough to go shouting about how amazing I am for giving away a few £.

True. But if it makes just one person give to charity it's done the job.

I can't help feeling it says more about the people you're friends with on Facebook than anything else, I've seen a few people on mine doing this bucket challenge thing and none of them have been "shouting about how amazing they are," it's just a bit of fun while raising awareness for a charity.

Surely that depends on how many people it's put off?

As was posted earlier, donations to ALS are 10 times higher this year compared to the same time last year. If people doing this puts you off donating to charity then you're the tit, not them.

It doesn't put me off donating to charity, it just puts me off donating to this particular charity.

In the same way as the dying african kids adverts shown during meal times puts me off donating to that particular charity, or the abused dog adverts put me off donating to that particular charity.

I don't need you to try and be emotionally manipulative or use shock tactics. If you want me to donate, be open, honest and give me the facts.

If that makes me a tit, then fine, I'd rather be a tit than easily manipulated :p

True. But if it makes just one person give to charity it's done the job.

also id imagine quite a few (if not all) of the celebs will most likely have donated themselves. gates especially given his track record of donations. i see taylor swift gave some cash etc.

I believe there is a pretty established 14 day cool-down period that one has to endure between seeing an advertisement for a charity and actually donating, lest one be seen as weak-minded or easily influenced.
