Hi

I have decided to get a few new bits for my car. Looking at alpine and pioneer headunits, a set of component speakers for the front and a set of smaller 13cm coaxial speakers that i can put in the parcel shelf. Going for the 13cm speakers so i have a little sound in the back as at the minute there is no speakers in the back at all.

In the boot i think i want 2 10" subwoofers or 1 12" although i listen to more dance music so maybe a pair of smaller subs would be better ?. I can get a 4 channel infinty amp pretty cheap but its 3 years old so maybe get a new one and would prefer to power all speakers through a amp as the sound quality should be better im told.

Does anybody want to help me out and reccomend some parts and general information about car audio as i dont have much of a clue especially choosing amps that have correct power settings etc.

Currently looking at www.caraudiosecurity.com as they seem best for prices. I will spend up to £250 on a headunit and up to £120 on components the smaller 13cm speakers should be no more than about £60 as for the amp and subs have not really set a budget yet but want all the gear to last so i can put it in my future cars. I currently have a infinity 10" sub and the infinity 4 channel reference amp that was left in the car by my brother (previous owner, the stuff is still his he didnt sell it with the car just hasnt botherd to remove it yet) and could get these for a good price but would maybe prefer all new stuff.

Thanks :)

the subs should overpower the higher frequencies from the rear.
If they dont, then the rear speakers will drag the soundstage into the car away from the optimum place (pretty much centre of dash isnt it?)

Ye dont get me wrong i dont want to move the soundstage to the back of the car but surely i can have some small speakers there faded down a bit ?

Thanks
/yes im a ice n00b

you could try, but most are open basket, so even on a solid shelf the cones would be affected by the air movement in the boot from the subs, this would mean that the rears wont work to their full potential.
Many cars do have speaker on rear shelf with good effect, i think it might be a case of not having the subs being too active.

Having a look at headunits first and there are a few alpines that have caught my eye listed below. Does anybody have any input on them ?

alpine cda-9853R

alpine cda-9812RB
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/417.html

alpine cda-9855R
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/3455.html

I like the idea of a remote so the 9855R looks like it may be best but does anybody have experiance of the glide touch thingy ?

Im a bit lost in picking component speakers as for up to £120 or so there is so many. looking at infinity but then people mention focal, rainbow, diamond etc im a bit confused, anyone ?

Thanks

Infinity gear is generally nice, although some people find the sound a little harsh on the ears.

You say you're after dance music, which a pair of sealed 10's might be best for. However, i'd rather have one good sub, costing double the money rather than two poorer ones. You can probably also afford to amp a single 12 better too (rather than having two underpowered subs farting away).

Something like a Resonant Engineering SE12 would make a superb sub powered correctly.

This monoblock amp puts out 675w RMS into 2 ohms, which will complement a dual 4 ohm sub. Like the SE12: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pro...d=2962&cadid=255d9f69d8e67fd0d793a35a6334893a

that's a little overkill isnt it? a single !2" driven by 250-300w at the most should be more than adiquate.

I didn't know his budget. :o

If you're going for a 4-channel amp, with two of the channels bridged for the sub, then for ~£100 JBL subs are pretty safe for the budget, and JL are a solid brand but I don't know what their lower end subs are like. :)

Which JBLs have you heard? They're generally well built subs, and JBL are a brand of the Harmon Kardon Group, which also owns Mark Levinson, Infinity etc.

I had the same thing in mind - I've always had rear speakers in my cars and have "enjoyed" the surround sound stage that you get but 2 weeks ago I installed some decent amped front componants and a sub in the boot...I havent looked back since.

Despite not having rear speakers as such, it really does sound amazing, the bass is undirectional as the waves dont have time to form (they're massive) so you dont hear the bass from behind, but it creates the illusion of being surrounded by sound.

I was really impressed. Bare it in mind - rear speakers are definately not needed.

Ok having talked about my plans on a local car forum i have been shown this auction site store thats based in America. There prices are fantastic and can get a set of diamond audio S600s hex components for over £300 cheaper than the uk stores... £550 here and can get them for £200 from that shop even if taking a risk with importing i think its worth it.

Will probably get my amps and speakers there. As for the head unit i think im going for the 9812rb.

Hows that sound ?

Thanks

Ok, having looked on the internet i think its worth importing from america so here is my shopping list that i can get delivered to me for £750 including tax/import dutie etc.

2 MTX THUNDER 7500 T7510-44 SUBWOOFERS 10" 1600W PAIR $189

Phoenix Gold XENON 400.1 X400.1 CLASS D Amp NEW 05 400W $129 (2 of = $258) (or reccomend 1 amp that can power both subs)

PHOENIX GOLD TI 5 COMP ELITE 5.25" COMPONENTS TI5COMP $299

Phoenix Gold XENON 200.4 X200.4 4 Channel Amp NEW 2005 $229

Can someone please reccomend a amp that will power both subs as im a bit daft at that...and would save on postage and boot space. The 4 channel amp will power the components and has the extra channels so in the future i can add more speakers if i wish :)

Thanks

As i keep on saying my 12" GT3 has been fantastic, it took loads of abuse for one year being driven by a PG 900Watt RMS Monoblock without missing a beat, well built good sounding great priced sub imho, i've heard some JL stuff using the same amp that don't sound as good.

Go for 1 good sub powered well rather than two mediocre ones powered feebly!
