I now have my new car and its all good but the stereo is not.

What head unit do you guys have? What is good at the moment?

What 6x9's are good? I'm still not sure if I am putting a sub in there yet. Shall I power my 6x9's from an amp or just run them straight into the head unit?

I am looking at an alpine head unit and some rockford fosgate 6x9's at the moment... Shall I get the same make for both? or does it make a massive difference?

TY

I'm still not sure if I am putting a sub in there yet.

Decide first.

I had an Alpine 7894RB which was fairly good in its day. What is good for you now depends on what you will do with it (do you want nav, mp3, DVD, bluetooth?) and how much you want to spend, but brands like Pioneer, Alpine, Blaupunkt and Clarion (Nakamichi or Denon if you're going to look second hand, since I'm guessing you don't want to spend mega-bucks) should be on your radar.

If you decide to run 6x9s instead of a sub (:() then you may as well amp them.

You don't need to get the same brands for head unit and speakers, no!

Something alpine to fit your budget

Good set of components in the front, suitably sized sub in the boot, no 6x9s and a 4 channel amp

The x001 is a superb head unit, used to have one, but if you want to spend 300 on the hu, why a refurbished old model and not the new equivalent?

6x9s are ****, good for being loud but sod all else. As above, a 4 channel amp, components and sub will be the best sounding budget setup in almost any car

Sorry I meant 300 altogether. What do you mean by a 4 channel amp? as in it has 4 outputs? Will I be able to run the components and the sub from an amp? Or is it better to run the components from the head unit?

Ah my bad. If iPod is your main source, the x001 is about as good as you'll find at that price.

A 4 channel amp has 4 inputs and 4 outputs - you can use 2 as a stereo pair for the front and bridge the other 2 to run the sub
