Looking to book a trip here in Jan/Feb 2018. Any tips/advice? I see Thomson do package tours, assume I'm better booking my own flights/hotel/excursions? Ideally we want to see the northern lights.

Been twice once we flew to Reykjavik with Icelandair, it was a package with flights, accomodation and a selection of tours, couldn't fault it really it was great. A lot of their packages you can choose which excursions to do, including Northern Lights tours at the correct time of year... Not sure how their prices compare to Thompson and the like though.

Second time we went for a cruise we stopped off at different points around Iceland which was really cool as we got to see places that we probably wouldn't have been able to visit otherwise.

I absolutely love the place, already planning to head back there when the baby is a little bit older :)

Take money. Lots, and lots of money.

DOn't take any money... But take your card(s), you can use cards for everything there, still haven't touched their money :p Just check if your bank charges, with different banks one charged a set amount (about £1.50 or so) and the other charged a percentage, if we'd have known that before hand could have used one for smaller purchases and one for larger purchases.

Oh and get a hotdog.

This. It's expensive. We visited for a week on our way home from Canada and the US during the summer. The Blue Lagoon is worth a visit, so is the visitor's centre at Eyjafjallajökull. Thingvellier National Park is spectacular as well; it's on the boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates (which are pulling apart). You can walk down the rift.

Get a Revolut card and use it for fee free card payments, fill it up now before the currency exchange gets even worse.

We went in October and it was fantastic, we did the Northern Lights super Jeep tour, a minibus tour of the Golden Circle (both with http://discover.is highly recommend them) and an Icelandic horse session with http://islenskihesturinn.is which was also fantastic.

We booked flights with easyjet direct from Belfast, and sorted out own accommodation because most of the package deals had god awful looking hotels or hostels. Cost us £1200 for a week for flights and accommodation for two. Car rental is also a must I would say, it's quite spread out so being able to hop in a car and go somewhere else on a whim is great.

Food booze and shopping is very expensive, just double the prices over here and you won't be far off.

Edit - buy a DSLR camera and tripod if you don't have one already, learn how to use it and you will get some great photos. Most of the colours of the Northern Lights are lost on human eyes and using a camera is the best way to see them in their full glory.

Primarily after Northern lights? If so, investigate heading to Norway instead.

And go in November rather than January/February.

If you go to Iceland, enjoy what it has to offer and consider the Northern lights just a bonus if you see them.
