So I dusted off the box sets for these games and installed them for the upteenth time and have started playing my way through IWD1 + HoW and intend to play them all over again.

My main question is why don't they make classic RPGs like this anymore. I remember the first time I played these games and they were incredible. The story and the gameplay were outstanding. Graphically they are showing their age now. But even the old school graphics do not detract from how great thse classics were.

I have played more modern RPGs like skyrim, fallout but none of them are really on par with BG or IWD. Are there any modern game outhere that follow D&D rulesets faithfully or as close to faithfully as possible with the same kind of party creation dynamics and rich storylines ? All the newer games I have tried simply don't have the same magic. The closet I think I have come is NWN2 but even thats not relly new as its been out for many years....................

There are lots of isometric RPGs in this vein on the horizon thanks to kickstarter. Off the top of my head, we have Shadowrun Returns(out this month),new planescape torment game, wasteland 2, Project eternity, to name a few. I am not sure about them following D+D rules, but tbh, I think it is outdated any way personally.

Are they all due for release soon?

Absolutely great games, make sure you check out all the mods especially unfinished business. There's loads available at http://www.pocketplane.net and a few other sites.

And yeah, there are quite a few isometric RPGs being kickstarted atm. I'm particularly looking forward to Project Eternity.

"Open world" is/was the new hotness & it's much easier/cheaper to write generic shooter 101 than it is a 60 hour RPG.

Is probably more accurate than this:

Because there isn't a huge demand for them anymore otherwise a major publisher would have jumped at it in an instant.

At least in my opinion..

It's just easier to cash in in other ways. The McDonald's approach. Doesn't mean the demand isn't there - as can be seen by the popular kickstarter projects that smashed their original funding amount.
