iCloud Drive mistake

I made a rookie mistake a few weeks ago with my MBP following an update, and selected iCloud Drive. I don't want this.

Am I correct in thinking that disabling this option will subsequently delete everything from my MBP, and therefore the best procedure would be to backup to a physical disc, disable iCloud Drive and then restore from backup?

Ok, did some more searching.

It was only the Documents and Desktop affected. I disabled iCloud Drive and the files were promptly deleted from the MBP. I then just coped the files over from iCloud back to the Documents folder, and all sorted. Does seem a bit backward, but not too many files and a reasonably quick internet connection and it is all sorted.
