Icon changing problem.

Hello, well, I have a niggling problem, I'm not the most savvy when it comes to customizing Mac's which is why I'm asking for help here.

I'm trying to change my Safari icon from the blue and silver to a black one that I've downloaded. I press Apple + I on the Safari original icon, then I do the same for the custom one. I copy the small thumbnail of the custom one, then I paste it over the small thumbnail of the original icon. Safari now shows a little white box with "PNG" in it, instead of the actual icon. I've tried two different icons of different file types and they are both doing exactly the same thing.

I've logged out and back in and the changes still haven't been applied, I know I've done something wrong there, but the sticky only describes the method I've already tried for changing icons. Can somebody point me in the right direction please?

Sorry Feek but the first method didn't work. I've tried two different icons from two different creators. One was a PNG and the other an ICNS filetype. At the moment I'm still stuck with a ridiculous looking white square with the word "PNG" in the middle of it. It's really doing my head in so I think I'll try using CandyBar like you suggested, and changing the icon that way.


EDIT:

Don't worry I've managed to fix it now. All I did was highlighted Safari, Apple + I, highlighted the thumbnail verison in the top left corner and then pressed backspace. It then gave me the black icon I'd been trying to change to, strangely.

Sometimes you have to remove the icon from the dock, or delete the application cache before it updates properly.

I tried the removing of the dock icon EVH. I still don't know why the Safari icon isn't showing in CandyBar, although I am now able to change the icon by going into the resources folder and overwriting the Compass.icns file like Feek described earlier.

Sometimes you need to force restart the dock and the finder

Open a terminal window and type killall Dock [enter] and killall Finder [enter] (case sensitive). If you have the icon in the dock, close the app and drag it out before you do those and then put it back after. If all else fails, reboot.

That might be where I failed before then, I was simply logging out.
