icons in windows not showing correctly

im running windows xp pro and all of a sudden my icons all changed to the unrecognised file icon that widows use. this goes for files as well as exe files, shortcuts etc. very odd and annoying any idea how to fix this?

install tweakui

look for the repair option, and click 'rebuild icon cache'

Try downloading TweakUI from microsoft. I think it has an option to repair/rebuild all the icon stuff.
