I have 5 pc's connected in a simple network with a cable router. If I do away with the router and use one of my computers to share the internet access, will the performance of the internet connection, download speeds and file sharing accross the network be affected?

I am considering this, as trying to run a small game server behind the router is proving impossible.

Why is the game server difficult to setup? Surely its just a case of forwarding the ports to the server.

I have tried a hundred times to forward the correct ports, even making it a DMZ but it never works. the computer running the game server has to have the IP address alocated to me by NTL. If I remove the router and plug the machine running the server direct into the cable modem it works fine as it picks up the right IP. Been trying to find a way to solve it.

What game are you running a server for and please tell me you are giving people the external Ip to connect to and not your internal IP ?

Its a Farcry dedicated server, it registers on Ubi.com, and shows in available games but you cant join it as its greyed out and shows a ping of 9999. Even if you try and join by the external IP it won't and just gives a connection time out. As I say when the modem is connected to the machine direct it works fine, you can join and play.
