Lo All,

My aunts just offered to help me pay some money towards a pc engineering course with ICS or something similar.

Has anyone here done something like this before or anything similar and is it worth doing?

Hope you can help.

Thanks

Evening, ive have done some distance learning in the past - its a great way of learning whilst working as you fit it in during your spare time which is good and there is always an online tutor who u can make contact with for support - u just need to have enough discipline to learn at home

Hope this helps

Ive heard good and bad things about these companies, computeach etc. Ive heard complaints they are not giving qualifications companies actually want, and just giving you the qualifications to go onto higher education (uni etc). Check it is a proper recognised qualification (A level etc) before going for it.

I've just talked someone i know out of these silly coputeach/ICS courses. If you seriously want to get quals suitable for the IT industry, and your self employed and living at home, which is what i assume you are. Invert in some self teach books, and take the exams that the IT industry actually want.

Still in the end, you'll be fighting again grads with these quals, and more importantly, people with 3+ years experience and the correct quals. Its tough in the IT sector, but you can make a break.

I made a thread only a short time ago, to find qualifications/certificates that rivaled/bettered the silly rebadged MDTS exam computeach where selling for £7000!

I would see what (realisic) jobs are around at the moment and what sort of experience and qualifications they are asking for. The ICS, or similar, will give you a qualification at the end, but if employers don't rate them or prefer experience (most do) then it may be a bit of a waste.

I would look at your local colleges and see if there are any part-time evening or full-time single year courses you can do to get started (being unemployed often entitles you to a discount), and maybe get an entry level job and progress within a company. You learn a heck of a lot when doing the job, even at entry level.

I personally wouldn't waste money on these courses. Buy the books and learn it for yourself. Much better idea than paying some company to send you books at crazy price.

What area are you trying to get into?

Hullo,

Think i've gone off those courses now, thinking of going to nwk in gravesend.

I just found 4 Junior Pc Engineer Jobs Today. The only requirement i didn't have was a car. I been saving for ages to get a new pc, i got just over a grand but it looks like i'll have to use some of it to buy new car + lessons now :( if i don't get one before my 19th b-day i'll probably get one around then but i won't know what to get.

Still signed on at job centre and it's 2 month's till have have to go back and it's already been a month since i last signed and i haven't done very much since then. I wanna come off it but my mum won't let me. It's just putting pressure on me and i'm finding it really hard.

Sorry for going on.

Azz

I'd say the best thing you could do is have a proper think about EXACTLY what kind of job, what sort of role you want.

Then do some research in to what these positions are asking for.

My advice would be to get yourself some books and study for the relevant exams at home in your own time, and take them in your nearest centre. Much more useful than these computeach or ICS type courses.

Do you know where these centres are? I am in Kent and i cannot find much info on them. I am looking to take exams in Computer Hardware. I do already have one years experience in Computer Hardware but it is still not enough. I have sent out my cv to over twenty companies and have only had one reply which was from someone who ran there own business.
