Hey guys,

I am looking for an external HDD box, just wondering if Icy Box is any good?

I came across one that is the Icy box IB-370, which has a built in fan, would that version be better than the other ones??

Cos i heard even though they work without a fan, but some have reported that it is very very hot inside the case??

thanks :D

Can't remember what my model number is, but it supports SATA hard drives and has USB2.0 and eSATA interfaces (silver). It's great, no problems at all and the setup is the easiest thing (just slides in and that's it). Comes with a SATA -> eSATA PCI bracket as well which is very handy, as well as on\off switches for both the units power and its LED's. My only gripe is that the eSATA cable is quite short, and if you've got your PC on the floor like me then you won't be able to place the IcyBox on your desk :(

Nope they are cheap and nasty!
If this is your opinion of the Icy Box, it might be worthwhile recommending something else for the Poster, which in your opinion is not cheap and nasty. :)

It might also be worth posting WHY he thinks it's cheap and nasty. I've got one and it works a treat. Recommended.

I've owned two of these enclosures and they have both broke, one after a week and the other after two months. The circuitry board that controls the USB just stopped working?.

The hard-drives inside both the enclosures still worked fine.

I have since sold my old IDE drives off and bought a Western Digital Elements 500GB USB2.0 External Hard Drive.

AVOID

I ordered an Icy Box NAS and I had all kinds of problems with it, very poor transfer rates (sub 20Mbit), it would intermittently stop responding and sometimes completely lose the disc requiring a couple of restarts - more than once resulting in data corruption, within a day or 2 it died totally and I had to RMA it... the replacement was little better... it can sustain 30Mbit but thats pretty poor (I have a switched gigabit LAN - everything else manages 90+Mbit most of the time), it hasn't died yet and only stops responding after about 2 weeks uptime but all in all its pretty abysmal...

Asking around after I had to RMA the first one I heard a lot of horror stories with Icy Box... atleast it was cheap... cheap and nasty...

If your looking for an external HDD I'd look at the Seagate Freeagent or WD Mybook, if you want just an enclosure then I can't really reccomend anything as the only ones I've had experience with haven't been too great.
