Hi, I'm just wondering - is there some sort of ID card available to British residents to travel within the EU? I know there is legislation being introduced for an ID card, but I'm not sure if there are others available out there as an alternative to a passport while travelling in Europe.

Thanks very much.

Cool. I just needed to make sure. I think other EU countries accept ID cards as an alternative to a passport though.

yep they do, but as far as I can remember England didn't sign up to it.

Yes you can, but it is advised that you have your national identity card. When i was back in Germany, my cousins traveled down with me to spain just on id cards. Left there passport at home :p

The only time I have ever needed my passport travelling all over europe from country to country is to get in and out of the UK. Oh and to get out (but not into) Switzerland, they wouldnt stamp my passport as I was going out either :(

Yeah the UK isn't part of the Schengen area, so you'll need your passport to get in and out of here. In terms of travelling from one country to another within the EU except the UK then national ID cards would be fine, but you'll need your passport anyway for the UK.
