I'd forgotten how utterly awesome sci-fi can be.

Thing that annoyed me about the most recent BSG season was that they didnt realise how much it would cost to keep two sets, hand to quickly get rid of the second battlestar and then not have much action in the rest of the series because they didnt have much budget left :(

Last series next series as well...

Watch the new Battlestar Galactica. It is better than anything else, ever.

Including original Star Wars. Yes.

(Hides...)
Babylon Five? Pah!

Battlestar Galactica is where it's at. Even normal people watch it!
Got to agree with you guys. Battlestar Galactica is one of the best series ever!

I also enjoy 4400... is that classed as sci-fi?

b5 one of the best sci fi ever, partly because the series was drawn up before it was filimed and partly because it was much darker than anything else around at the time while i liked star trek the fluffy cuddly feel to it and 45 minute oh dear theres a problem.... problem fixed got annoying.

any one watch space above and beyond ? another cracking series that got axed far to early

the new bsg is superb tho eagerly awaiting the third and sadly last series

Love sci-fi, one of the best series i ever saw was Dark skies but all the muppets where frothing at the mouth for Gillian Anderson...i mean X-files so it tanked.

Really enjoying Flash Gordon atm, quality action.

Dark Skies was awesome, Jeri Ryan's opening scene was somewhat good :)

aye just watched "the die is cast" episode of ds9, totally boggles the mind at how dumb scfi has gotten with bsg and sg1 abusing the mind.

I do fear for Battlestar Galactica. The network seem to be completely in shock that they have a show that is highly regarded and don't know what to do with it. Latest rumour is that they're 'doing a Lost' and splitting the last series across two years, 10 eps a year. Which IMO would be a crushing blow to the audience and the ratings.

After becoming addicted to BSG (by the way you cannot group the shoddy SG1 with the ground breaking BSG :p) I'd say DS9 is the only one of the Star Treks that can be well regarded next to the more modern shows. TNG still holds a place in my heart, but its not as great as I once thought.

The Die is Cast was good, but I'd say watch an episode like In the Pale Moonlight or Far Beyond the Stars for DS9's best.

Err... sorry but Space Above and Beyond has no place in a thread with Babylon 5 in the OP... Babylon 5 was a groundbreaking, well-written, and stirring in a way that still touches its fans 15 years on. SAAB (or, at least, the pilot and first 2 episodes, cause I couldn't bear to watch any more) was a dumb action series with bad acting and cheesy writing, and stereotyped characters. I want to rave more about Bab5, but I feel I will sully its name by writing about it with the same fingers that have just typed about Space: Above and Beyond. I am going to go wash my hands now, and purify myself by listening to a few G'Kar quotes on the Babylon 5 Sound Depot before I am again worthy to evangelise about it! :p

I'm sorry but there's a good reason for this. I was left speechless by that show when it first came out, but now it's turned into a non-stop torrent of brainless filler episodes detailing the romantic entanglements of the various secondary characters. It should be renamed into The Bold and the Battlestar.
If David Eick had gotten his behind into gear and actually mapped out the series in advance like JMS did for Bab5 it would still be going strong, but it's been seriously deteriorating ever since the middle of Season 2 and most of its core audience have already lost interest.
I'm sure it hurts to acknowledge it, but the sooner you get your head out of the sand and realise it's no longer as good as it was the sooner you can go back to rewatching Bab5 and get some REAL sci-fi action! :p

Although I have more of an affinity for Star Trek, specifically TNG (which has aged badly) and DS9 (which hasn't), B5's story arc was one of the best ever. In fact, so many modern television series use the same sort of narrative style now.

Anyone remember the series they did in the early 80's "War of the Worlds" not many people liked it but I thought it was ok, the only thing that got on my nerves was the fact that no one in the general public seemed to remember the planet being half destroyed by the martins first time around.

Heh good one :D. After reading some of the posts in the thread I was thinking I might give BSG a go, but if that's the sort of drivel it descends into...no thanks.

It doesn't descend anywhere NEAR drivel, my good man :) The only odd abberation was in the second serires, with the episode called "Scar". Only bit that didn't really fit in with the story...

I await the new series of BSG in November (in the US) with eager anticipation, thank you God for NNTP transfers ;)

Absolutely awesome series. Prepare for obsession, addiction, withdrawal, and despair! :D

Oh yes.

Many a night the wife and I would sit through half a season in one go...and then only not watched the other half cause we would get no sleep at all otherwise!

Watch it right through....you really will feel addicted and suffer withdrawal once it's over!

How much did the whole lot set you back, i got the full oxset sometime last year, with all the series (including the rather lacklustre and disappointingly unfinished crusade) and all the tv movies (including the pilot for the abandoned series legend of the rangers) and that cost me £180..

Couple of interesting things to watch out for: Subliminal messages during episodes with the psi-ppl (so long since I watched it i forget) and see if you can catch in the credits the name of a "actor" playing a "maintenance man" extra in the last ever episode :D

Right, and all that melodrama in the 3rd series about how the marriage of the mechanic to the janitor is going is absolutely rivetting stuff. Cause we really care about this pair of extremely minor and uninteresting characters. Especially in the face of universal extinction, their marriage really is vital to the plot when the Cylons are about to descend on the pathetic remnants of the human race and nuke them to oblivion... Or that other weird one-off in the 3rd season about some doctor who kills people from a particular planet, how is that relevant to the overall plot?

They've basically run out of ideas on how to continue the plot and are trying to drag it out as much as possible. If they had balls they would have already taken them to Earth by now. They're just making it up as they go along, and famously the series creator admitted that he hadn't yet decided who the final five cylons would be until 2 weeks before the season finale was aired.

I could tell it was going to fizzle out by the way the end of the Pegasus storyline was handled. Without revealing any spoilers, certain characters were forced to make some uncomfortable decisions, and it would've been interesting to see if they would've gone through with their decision and how they would've dealt with the consequences. Instead, something completely random happens that takes the initiative out of their hands, and they no longer have to take that difficult decision. That plot arc was thereby wound up nice and neat, without any long-term implications to the plot. I found it hugely disappointing. The rest of season 2 was all filler, except for the last episode where they settle on New Caprica. Then in season 3 the first 3-4 episodes were about getting the colonists back OFF New Caprica, and the whole rest of the season was completely piontless and unnecessary filler!

Bought it season by season from fleabay, paid about £80 all in. Could have got the bigass boxset for a few quid more, but i bought them over a period of time to "save" money :)
