I'd like some advice on a new cpu and motherboard

My pc i built in 2008 is finally dying i think. I am getting random lockups all the time and have tried every bios fix, changing ram, checking hard drives,...etc... So i'm pretty sure the motherboard is faulty.

I want to find an equivalent of an Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU X9770 in an i5 or an i7.

I think there's a model in the i5 which is the equivalent of the processor i mentioned but i don't know the name of it.

A decent motherboard which doesn't lock up and doesn't have all sorts of pointless features i would never use would be nice, too.

I don't have a budget but all i want is an ''estable'' machine which can play pretty much any game i throw at it without freezing or locking up.

The Asus Extreme Striker 2 is a godawful motherboard and regret purchasing it since day one. It's only stable through bios updates and many, many tweaks.

I'm scared to buy a ROG Asus extreme motherboard these days as i have a feeling it may just freeze or lock up ingame or from random browsing.

What will you be using the machine for, just gaming or do you do any rendering? The i5 is the most highly recommended processor for gaming at the minute as the hyperthreading on the i7 isn't used in games.

I'm about to build a system and im going for the i5-3570k paired with a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H mobo, based upon what people have recommended to me off this forum who are much more knowledgeable than I will ever be :) but they come to £310-ish...

I would recommend something like this if you have no budget and want to game on the
machine that you are wanting to build.

Processor: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-418-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567
Motherboard: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-389-GI

As you requested the motherboard is nothing special doesn't have loads of fancy bits
on it that you would never use and it will run all the latest hardware on it as well.
You will probably want to get yourself some DDR3 memory as well to go with the motherboard
and processor.

Yeah. I really don't need anything faster than a 3.20 GHz Quad Core. I would like an equivalent of the Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU X9770 in speed terms through an i5.

The graphics card i have can play pretty any game right now but i just want a stable machine where i can play games for a few hours every evening without any lockups.

Because right now i can't even play Hitman Absolution for more than an hour without the computer freezing where i'm forced to do a hard reboot.

I just want to be able to run a game with no problems and no freezing.

I'm thinking about getting this processor - Intel Core i5-3450

And i'm unsure what motherboard i should get right now.

I have the DDR3 memory ready and the extra stuff for the machine like the gpu,...etc...

The motherboard that I have linked will run the i5 3450 no problem, thing is if you are
going to get new stuff you may as well get stuff that will last you a few years so while
the processor I linked is on special offer had you may as well not get it and future proof
yourself ?

Unless the OP is planning on running really high resolutions or going SLI that motherboard is a bit overkill if you ask me

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM £161.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
Total : £263.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

these will give you the best bang for your buck, that motherboard is one of the more recommended versions here on the forums and Shadz is right that you should grab the 3570k whilst its on offer, it's definitely worth the extra money over the 3450.

I may be wrong but the OEM i5 doesnt come with a CPU cooler, so you may want to look into the retail one or buy another brand cooler, if I was you I'd be inclined to get a branded cooler which will allow you to keep temperatures cool should you wish to overclock in the future

I have a Coolermaster Cosmos S case. It's a good case but it has poor cable management. So i might get a new case but i won't spend more than 140 on one.

I got 4 epsilon 1010w psus spare. I only used 1 properly. I don't know what people think of them on here but i have built a pc for a friend and he's had it for years with no problems so i don't know what people think of them. I don't know if they're considered rubbish or not. I might snap up a corsair psu or ocz but apparently i heard ocz are generally not good psus.

Yeah thats the impression I get regarding ocz's too, I been recommended to go for a Seasonic.

The case I have in mind is the Antec P280 but currently out of stock and £100 is my utter most budget for a case but I need a large one to squeeze in a 7970 GPU, which isnt small.

This will be my first ever build, I havent touched a PC in nearly 10 years now, and all my knowledge has come from people on here, its a great forum for information and recommendations. Luckily I have a moderate budget for my machine so can afford decent quality parts so i shouldnt have to touch it for a couple of years at least.
