IDE drive - Making itself write protected!

Okay I have the spec as sig, a X38 Quad GT board with a 400GB SATA main drive, and a 160GB IDE secondary media drive I scavenged this off of my old PC, it works fine. However sometimes when I try and write to the media drive where all my movies, photos and music are stored, I get a Vista mesage saying that it is write protected.

I deactivate the write protection through the properties menu for the drive and it then tells me each individual file in write protected. If I re-boot the PC the problem goes away, then it re-appears again randomly. I can find no common event which triggers it. I don't write to the media drive very often, but an estimate of once every 3 or 4 times this happens.

Any ideas?

Its on Vista x64 fully updated.

I am the only user on the computer setup, the files have come from a range of sources, and when it does this, it affects all files on the drive!

Oh I see, it was from a windows XP PC but when I stripped it out I wiped it completely by using Vista setup, slow formatted. It was fine through Vista setup, it also seems that if I leave the PC alone for a while after I switch it on, it doesn't seem to have the problem. If I boot it up and start to get on with things before everything has loaded up, then the problem presents itself!

Seems the last thing to load is the windows sidebar, if I leave it for 2 or 3 minutes it is all fine, if less then it locks the drive!
