hi, my friends pc is playing up. when you turn the system on everything loads as it should, once windows had loaded and you can see the desktop after about 5 seconds it just goes to a black screen and restarts. on bootup its says something about a IDE error. both dvd rw and HD are set as sata. ???

First step is to turn off the automatic restart so you can see the full error message.
Either via F8 on boot and select disable automatic restart (can't remember exact wording) or booting via safe mode, and turning it off in the OS.
XP/Vista should be basically the same:
Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Advanced and under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"
Then report the full error message
