Guys

In short, I gave an old pc to my mother.

Asus A7N8X
2gb Mem
1 IDE HDD (80gb)
ATI 2400 (i think)
DVD RW
XP

anyway, all working ok. She since has needed more hdd space, so she bought a 500gb IDE drive.

The pc will boot and run with - >

1hdd + DVD RW

OR

2hdd's on IDE 0 & IDE 1

The pc will hang at post if both HDD's are on the same ide cable (will boot ok if they are on seperate ones)

The pc boots with either HDD (but not both at the same time) + the DVD RW (as long as they are on seperate IDE cables)

the long and the short of it seems to be that i am unable to have any more than one HDD or DVD on the same IDE cable.

got me stumped - any ideas?

Have you set them as slave / master

There is usually a jumper to pick Slave / Master / Cable Select.

The Master should be the last device on the cable and jumpered as master
The slave goes in the middle of the cable and is jumpered as slave.

ok, tried that

the order is now

HDD 1 (jumper on master) - ide 0

HDD 2 (no jumper) - ide 1

dvdrw - (no jumper) ide 1

failed

took about 5 mins to get through post (the dvdrw was not detected), then finally game me this message after verifying DMI data "nvidia boot agent" & "disk boot failure"

Are you sure that the no jumper position is slave? ... the slow boot it exactly what happens when both devices cross talk

Also worth trying the smaller HDD with the DVD as slave, usually the DVD drive with have CSM above a jumper block .... so you'd fit the jumper under S for slave.

Also worth checking for a new bios but if you can boot with the 500GB drive detected then that shouldn't be an issue

yeah, it was the master/slave position

all working now, i must have been using SATA's too long and forgot about the jumper settings.

You were right detco, no jumper did not mean slave as i had thought, as soon as i moved the jumper to position 3 (I think), everything worked normally.

So thanks very much...

my mother says thanks also.. lol
