I have a P5QE mobo and a seagate barracuda hardrive 500gb version

the mobo gives a choice of configurations, IDE and AHCI, i only have the one disk so it's either gonna be IDE or AHCI, from the mobo description the AHCI sounds the more modern faster configuration is that the case?

And will AHCI work with my model of hardrive, i have already installed windows and was using the IDE as it's the default would i be better off swithcing over to AHCI or leaving as is?

Not too sure but I've always run with AHCI enabled, I have seen reports that state that for normal desktop use it provides nothing and even saw 1 where it said it had a detrimental effect.

If you've already installed the OS then you can't simply switch over, the PC won't boot if you do. What I did was move my OS disk onto the bottom DriveExpert SATA port, think it's the 1 nearest to you that you want. Set this port to IDE mode, set the Intel to ACHI, then boot up. Windows will then detect and ask for drivers, so install them and shutdown. Then move the OS disk back over onto the Intel SATA port and job done, saves having to do a re-install. This was for XP, no idea about Vista but I've seen someone here post, probably Cob that Vista includes the ACHI drivers in the base install.

Well before i had a chance to read the above two posts....i enabled it....which was a mistake as my PC them locked up on reboot, and subsequently would not boot up windows and kept restarting itself, a quick trip back into the bios quickly sorted that and were back at IDE woo hooo, and everythings running fine again so no harm done

So after reading that last post and the link in the one above i guess for me it's not worth it, oh the joy of hindsight. Cheers for the help, think i'l be more careful when fiddling about with things in the bios from now on, i guess my beginners curiosity to all this new (to me) pc building stuff got the better of me and i seem to be wanting to fiddle with everything at the moment
