Hey, I'm at uni and I'm trying to get some ideas together for a birthday present for my housemate!

I've got 7 of us to chip in £5 or so each.

He's really into his catering, cooking etc. He's doing a placement soon with the RAF catering so will be leaving us for a year.

I had the idea of getting him a nice set of knives, as he's always going on about how good a good set of knives are.

We'll get them in a nice box or something, engraved so he can remember us! :p

Any recommendations of a nice gift set of knives, £50 max - or something similar?

Sorry, I really couldn't resist! :D

"Also, I think knives are a good idea. Big **** off shiny knives. Ones that can skin an allegator. You see, knives don't make as much noise as a gun so we're more likely to use them. It'll **** em' right up. Guns for show, knives for a pro."

Totally agree - I bought a really heavy top quality saucepan with super space age micro doodle coating guff on it for a £10. Go to e.g. TK Maxx or somewere like that and you might be able to pick up something quality!

£50 is your limit a set of globals is out of the question, however you might be able to get a global chefs knife for that price, alternatively a Henkel which are very nice.

If they're really into their cooking get them a global. It will be better than a cheap set of knifes.

Failing that you could get him a nice set of steak knifes :P plus several nice steaks to cook for your tea :D

If your going to go for knives go for Sabatier, they are widely regarded at the highest quality knife manufacturer, although for the sort of money your talking about you might be a bit short.

http://www.firebox.com/product/1109 if the budget can stretch :p

To buy a good knife your looking at £50 quid each minimum. Look for some kind of Japanses folded steel with the handle and blade as one, although for that price it will be a struggle (or a wood handle with a central bar at worst). Id recommend a blade around 7 - 9 inches long depending on how big his hands are and quite a deep blade too.

Maybe something similar to the bottom one there:
