Parents got homecare from British Gas (to be fair they have always been really good at call outs, my dad had to use them numerous times in his old place and they were always spot on).

The new build they have has an ideal boiler/watertank/central heating system. British Gas came around for the first service and said it was all running perfectly fine, but it didn't have a magnetic filter.

It just catches bits of rust/ferrous stuff but was wondering if they should get one fitted? The T&Cs of homecare do state they won't honour any repairs if damage is caused by something they had advised.

Damage caused by limescale, sludge or other debris, if we’ve told you before that you need to carry out repairs, improvements or a British Gas Powerflush, or a similar process, but you haven’t done so

They quote a fairly heft price, over £200 I believe!

Snakeoil or worth it?

They work.

Could probs get a local plumber to fit one cheaper if the cost they quote seems too high.

They work and are useful. They’ll likely put issues it could potentially be down to the lack of it in future. Their Powerflush from experience is not far from a grand.

Definately work and if it's a new house I doubt they'd need the system flushing but it's always recommended.

Take a look at boiler-m8 ultimate, it's a solid brass filter rather than the cheaper plastic ones so has a 25year warranty rather than 5years. I've just had one fitted to mine.

Cheers all!

Nice one cheers, might get a local plumber in to take a look at how doable it'll be. Boiler pipe work is in an awkward/tight spot.

Doesn't need to be right next to the boiler, ideally it is the last thing on the return pipe but as close too as possible will do.

I'd be checking with Ideal on what warranty is supplied with their boiler, and how to keep it intact for the period, or even extend it. Most should have 5/7yr warranty. Whether your folks feel its worth while lining BG's pockets if the boiler has warranty is up to them ;)

Regardless of BG cover or warranty, I would advise having a filter fitted and double dose up on chemicals. Ideal are having problems with the main heat exchangers, which is no laugh for people without warranty or insurance!

Paha was already going to reply before reading the last paragraph. We have an IDEAL and have had a heat exchanger replaced, we’ve also had the dreaded fault pop up a couple of times since.
